Aryan Mann and Snehith Reddy: Indian-Origin Cricketers Poised to Confront Birth Nation in U-19 World Cup
In a compelling twist of fate, two young cricketers of Indian origin, Aryan Mann and Snehith Reddy, are preparing to face the nation of their birth, India, in a must-win match at the U-19 World Cup. Representing New Zealand, their journeys from Indian roots to Kiwi upbringing highlight the global diaspora of cricket talent.
From Indian Roots to New Zealand Dreams
Aryan Mann, a wicket-keeper batsman, and Snehith Reddy, a batting all-rounder, were toddlers when their families migrated from India to New Zealand. The Mann family moved from Patiala to Manurewa, a suburb of Auckland, in the late 2000s, while the Reddys left Vijayawada for Hamilton. Despite the geographical shift, cricket remained a constant in their lives, passed down through generations and now culminating in their selection for the New Zealand U-19 team.
Snehith Reddy's Cricketing Ascent
Snehith's passion for cricket was ignited at a young age. From the age of eight, his father, Krishna, would take him to amateur club games in their vicinity. "I used to get him to practice with me sometimes, he would throw the ball and I would hit," Krishna recalled in an interview with the New Zealand Herald. "He didn't want to, he would say he was too young, but he kept coming with me. That's how he gained interest in cricket."
His talent was soon recognized when he joined Hamilton Boys' High School, an institution known for producing notable Black Caps like Mitchell Santner and BJ Watling. At just 13, he caught the eye of coach Chris Kuggeleijn, a former New Zealand cricketer, who selected him for the first XI cricket team. "I've seen your talent and we want to give you an opportunity," Krishna recounted Kuggeleijn saying.
By 15, Snehith was being hailed as a serious talent. He describes himself as a modern batsman who blends technical finesse with clinical hitting. His cricketing idol is Daryll Mitchell, with whom he has spent considerable time discussing the game. "He is someone I can call any time and ask advice about my game, or anything," Snehith shared in an NZC reel.
Aryan Mann's Inspirations and Style
Aryan Mann draws inspiration from New Zealand captain Kane Williamson. "I love everything about him," he told Black Caps. "I was lucky to share the dressing room with him for Northern Districts, and he left a huge impact on me. So down to earth and so eager to help the youngsters out."
Despite his admiration for Williamson, Mann's playing style more closely resembles that of Ross Taylor. He boasts an array of powerful sweeps, a pleasing cover-drive, and a penchant for striking down the ground. Mann has already made his first-class debut, scoring half-centuries in both innings against Canterbury while batting at number eight.
Broader Representation in the Team
The New Zealand U-19 squad features two other cricketers of Indian origin: Selwin Sanjay and Jasakaran Singh, both born in Auckland. Jasakaran is known as a big-hitter, while Selwin is an off-spinner, adding depth to the team's diverse skill set.
The Upcoming Clash with India
As New Zealand faces India in this crucial U-19 World Cup match, the spotlight will be on Mann and Reddy, who embody the intersection of heritage and aspiration. Their stories underscore the global nature of cricket, where players often navigate dual identities on the field.
This encounter is not just a game but a narrative of migration, passion, and the unifying power of sport. Fans will be watching closely as these young talents strive to make their mark against the country where their cricketing journeys began.
