India skipper Shreyas Iyer says team cannot take anything for granted after first T20I loss to Ireland
India captain Iyer: Can't take anything for granted after Ireland loss

India T20I captain Shreyas Iyer acknowledged that his team faltered in bowling execution after suffering a historic 34-run defeat to Ireland in the first T20I in Belfast on June 26, 2026. This marked India's first-ever loss to Ireland in any format.

Match summary: Ireland's batting recovery and India's collapse

Ireland, put in to bat first, posted 182 for 9, driven by Lorcan Tucker's 50 off 36 balls and Gareth Delany's 49 off 32. After a top-order wobble, Ireland recovered to set a challenging target. India responded strongly, reaching 50 in the fourth over, with Abhishek Sharma smashing 50 off 20 balls. However, Ireland's bowlers triggered a collapse: from 45 for 1, India slumped to 148 all out, losing their last five wickets for 48 runs. Matthew Hollard (3 for 28), Matthew Humphreys (3 for 38), and Jai Moondra (2 for 26) were the chief architects.

Iyer's candid assessment: Loss of execution in bowling

Speaking at the post-match presentation, Iyer said, "I think initially, the bowlers were bowling well. They got lateral movement, and they got a couple of wickets as well. So we got a tremendous start, but in between, we lost execution. We made them hit straight down the ground, where we know that the dimensions are pretty small." He added that 140 would have been a chaseable score given the start.

Iyer attributed the performance partly to a long break from T20Is but stressed the need to move on. "Definitely a lot to learn from this game and see to it that we come out in the next game all guns blazing," he said.

Support for bowlers: Harshit Rana and Shivam Dube

Iyer praised pacer Harshit Rana, who returned from injury to bowl effectively, and all-rounder Shivam Dube. "They were getting help up front at the start, and Shivam has bowled crucial overs in the past. So I always back him, and I have played with him in the domestic circuit as well. I know his strengths and weaknesses. And Harshit Rana, he bowled phenomenally. Coming out of an injury to perform at this level and showcase this sort of talent, it is simply brilliant," Iyer stated.

A message of humility and hard work

Concluding, Iyer sent a clear message to the world champion side: "I think you cannot take anything for granted. You cannot just turn up and win matches. You have to work hard and see to it that you are in that moment. Like I mentioned earlier, you have got to stay in the present and see to it that if you have got that opportunity to squeeze the opponent, we've got to do that. And yeah, never take any moment or situation lightly."

The loss serves as a wake-up call for India as they prepare for the second T20I, aiming to level the series.
