Former Indian cricket star Harbhajan Singh has voiced strong criticism regarding the treatment of modern legends like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in recent times. Speaking from the sidelines of the ILT20 at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, the veteran spinner expressed his sadness and confusion over how senior players are often phased out.
Harbhajan's Blunt Take on 'Transition'
Harbhajan Singh stated he was not in a position to definitively answer why iconic players face being "pushed away," a move frequently justified by the team's need for "transition." He admitted this trend is "beyond our understanding." Drawing from his own experiences and those of former teammates, Harbhajan labelled the situation as "very unfortunate."
He pointedly added, "It is a bit unfortunate that those people are deciding their future who have not achieved much." This remark highlights a perceived disconnect between decision-makers and the achievements of the players in question.
Praise for Unwavering Champions
Despite his criticism of the system, Harbhajan was effusive in his praise for the current batting form of both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in ODI cricket. He emphasized that there was "never a time" he thought Kohli was off track.
He specifically highlighted their performances post their retirements from Test and T20I cricket. Virat Kohli has scored back-to-back centuries in the ongoing ODI series against South Africa. Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma has notched one century and two half-centuries in his last five ODIs against Australia and South Africa.
Setting the Right Example for the Future
Harbhajan Singh concluded by applauding the duo not just for their runs but for their leadership and legacy. "I'm so happy for them; they are going very, very strong — not just going strong but setting an example for the younger generation to follow, showing what it takes to be a champion," he said.
He commended Kohli and Sharma for their resilience and for continuing to be "great players for India" both as batters and leaders, despite the external chatter about their careers and the team's direction.
