Shubman Gill Dropped from India's T20 WC Squad; Axar Named Vice-Captain
Gill Dropped, Axar VC in India's T20 WC Squad

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection committee has delivered a major surprise by omitting star opener Shubman Gill from the squad for the 2026 T20 World Cup. The decision has sent shockwaves through the Indian cricket community. In other significant changes, Ishan Kishan has been recalled as a backup wicket-keeper, while Jitesh Sharma has also been left out.

Selection Shake-Up: New Roles and Omissions

As the selectors convened to pick the team, a section of fans had campaigned for the reinstatement of Hardik Pandya as vice-captain. That move did not materialize. Instead, the all-rounder Axar Patel has been appointed as the new vice-captain under the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav. This confirms the faith of head coach Gautam Gambhir and the team management in Axar's leadership qualities.

Gill's exclusion is particularly startling given his status as a reserve player in India's triumphant 2024 T20 World Cup campaign. His fellow reserves from that squad—Rinku Singh, Avesh Khan, and Khaleel Ahmed—have also seen their fortunes wane. While Rinku finds a place but has been in and out of the side, Avesh and Khaleel are currently out of contention.

Analyzing Shubman Gill's T20I Form Slump

Since the 2024 World Cup final, Gill has been a constant feature in India's T20I setup. He captained the team on the tour of Zimbabwe in July 2024 following Rohit Sharma's retirement. His performances, however, have been inconsistent. He started with a 31 and a solid 66 in Zimbabwe, also scoring an unbeaten 58, but his form has dipped since.

During the Asia Cup in September 2025, he registered scores of 20*, 10, 5, 47, 29, 4, and 12. The Australia tour that followed yielded knocks of 37*, 5, 15, 46, and 29*. The critical statistic is that Shubman Gill has now gone 18 consecutive T20I innings without a half-century, his last fifty coming on 13 July 2024.

In the 15 matches he has played post the 2024 World Cup, Gill has accumulated 291 runs at an average of 24.25. While his strike rate of 137.26 remains decent, the lack of substantial scores has ultimately cost him his spot. Many fans perceive this as Gambhir making a tough, impartial call for the team's benefit.

Captain's Form and Pandya's Paradox

The spotlight also falls on captain Suryakumar Yadav's own batting form. Since taking over as full-time skipper, his numbers have seen a notable dip. He has managed only 239 runs across 21 innings, averaging a little over 13, with a strike rate around 120. This has, however, been overshadowed by the team's stellar results, including a recent series win over South Africa that sealed India's 8th consecutive bilateral T20 series victory.

The case of Hardik Pandya remains a topic of intrigue. The vice-captain of the 2024 World Cup-winning side was once seen as Rohit Sharma's natural successor. Not only did he not get the captaincy, but he also lost the deputy's role. His on-field credentials, however, are unmatched. Pandya is the first Indian to achieve the double of 2,000 runs and 100 wickets in T20Is.

His form since the 2024 World Cup has been exceptional. In 10 innings (14 matches), he has scored 341 runs, remaining not out in six of those, translating to a stunning average of 85.25. He has also claimed 22 wickets in the same period, underscoring his immense value as the premier all-rounder.

India's Squad for the 2026 T20 World Cup

Suryakumar Yadav (Captain), Jasprit Bumrah, Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (WK), Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel (Vice-Captain), Rinku Singh, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakaravarthy, Washington Sundar, Ishan Kishan (WK).

The selection decisions mark a bold new direction for the Indian T20 team as it builds towards defending its world title in 2026. The omission of a talent like Gill signals a clear emphasis on current form and team balance over reputation.
