German Ambassador to India Philipp Ackermann expressed disappointment over Germany's 2-1 defeat against Ecuador in the FIFA World Cup 2026 but downplayed its impact on the team's group position.
Match details and result
Ecuador, who entered the match after a 1-0 loss to Ivory Coast and a goalless draw with Curacao, secured a historic comeback victory against already-qualified Germany on June 25. Germany took an early lead through Leroy Sane following a Florian Wirtz assist, but Ecuador equalised in the ninth minute via a long-range strike from Nilson Angulo. Gonzalo Plata scored the winner in the 77th minute from close range after a set-piece, as Ecuador held firm under heavy late pressure.
Ackermann's reaction
Speaking to ANI, Ackermann said: "We started pretty well, actually, but we lost against Ecuador. I don't think that it changes our rankings in the group. But it was a bit of a disappointment. But other than that, I think the German team has started off very well." Looking ahead, he noted: "Now it seems that in the Round of 16, we might face France, and that's a tough one; frankly, they're a very good team."
Format and timing challenges
The envoy also commented on the expanded 48-team format and match timings for Indian viewers, calling it somewhat challenging: "But other than that, I'm a bit confused because it's so big, 48 teams is big, and then also the times are terrible in India, it's so far away, so you have to sit at night." Despite concerns, he expressed optimism: "But other than that, I think it's a good championship so far, and I keep my fingers crossed for the German team."
Historical significance for Ecuador
The victory secured Ecuador's place in the knockout stage, marking only the second time in their history they have progressed beyond the World Cup group phase.
