Sunil Gavaskar Lauds Sanju Samson's Crucial Knock in T20 World Cup Victory

Cricket icon Sunil Gavaskar has heaped praise on Sanju Samson following his match-winning performance against the West Indies in the T20 World Cup, describing the innings as a dream come true for the talented batter. Gavaskar emphasized that everyone in the cricket fraternity is delighted to see Samson succeed because he is universally regarded as a "nice guy" who has endured his share of ups and downs.

Samson's Brilliant 97* Ends Lean Patch at Perfect Time

Playing a high-pressure game in Kolkata on Sunday, Samson delivered a spectacular unbeaten 97 runs, steering India to a crucial victory. This innings marked a significant turnaround, ending a recent run of low scores that had not reflected his true potential in the lead-up to the global tournament. The knock came at an ideal moment for the team, providing a much-needed boost ahead of the semifinals.

Speaking exclusively on Star Sports, Gavaskar highlighted how Samson's performance relieved pressure not only from the player himself but also from his supporters. "This knock of 97 not out takes the weight off not just Sanju Samson’s shoulders, but off everyone who knows what a fine player he has been. He has had ups and downs, and we have felt them too because he is such a nice guy. Everybody wants him to do well," Gavaskar stated.

Emotional Victory and Team Strategy Praised by Gavaskar

Gavaskar pointed out that being named Player of the Match in a must-win encounter is a dream for any cricketer, and Samson's emotions were evident after hitting the winning runs. "To be the Man of the Match in a must-win game is a dream come true. You could see the emotions on Sanju's face after he hit the winning runs. He was three runs short of a hundred and it would have been fantastic had he reached the three-figure mark," he remarked, adding optimistically that another century might be in store for Samson in future matches.

The legendary batsman also analyzed India's successful chase, crediting the team's strategic focus on minimizing dot balls. "Having a set batter at one end is very beneficial. The other batter can look to knock singles and give more strike to the set batter. That way, there are not too many dot balls. In T20 cricket, the idea is to have as few dot balls as possible," Gavaskar explained.

He further noted that India's approach in this area has been exemplary, contributing significantly to their ability to chase challenging targets. "If you look at the teams with the lowest percentage of dot balls, India are pretty high up there. I am not saying they are the best, but they are up there. That is where half the battle is won. Out of 120 deliveries, if you score runs off 80 to 85 balls, you give yourself a real chance to chase scores like 190 to 200 and India did exactly that against the West Indies," Gavaskar concluded.

Looking Ahead to the Semifinal Against England

With this victory, India has secured a spot in the semifinals, where they will face England in Mumbai on Thursday. Gavaskar's comments underscore the collective relief and joy among Indian cricket fans, who are thrilled to see a sincere and hardworking player like Samson achieve the success he deserves on such a grand stage.

As the team prepares for the upcoming clash, Samson's innings serves as a testament to resilience and skill, setting a positive tone for India's campaign in the remainder of the T20 World Cup.
