FIFA Confirms Iran's Participation in 2026 World Cup, Rejects Italy Swap
FIFA Rejects Italy-Iran World Cup Swap, Iran to Play

FIFA has no plans to replace Iran with Italy at this summer's FIFA World Cup 2026, according to multiple reports. The idea was recently suggested by U.S. Special Envoy Paolo Zampolli, who is associated with Donald Trump. His proposal came amid rising tensions involving Iran and ongoing concerns over its participation due to geopolitical conflict.

FIFA Stands Firm on Iran's Participation

Uncertainty has surrounded Iran's presence in the tournament because of the ongoing conflict involving the United States and Israel. However, FIFA has signaled that the qualified teams will remain unchanged. The tournament, set to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, is scheduled to begin on June 11, and preparations are continuing as planned.

FIFA has not officially responded to Paolo Zampolli's suggestion. However, comments from FIFA president Gianni Infantino indicate a clear stance. While speaking in Washington last week, he stressed that Iran will take part in the tournament. He highlighted that the team has earned its place through qualification and deserves to compete. He also expressed hope that global tensions would ease before the event, adding that football should remain separate from political disputes.

Zampolli, who is of Italian origin, had reportedly suggested the idea as a way to include Italy national football team, a four-time world champion, in the tournament. He believes Italy's history and success justify its inclusion. However, Italy failed to qualify after losing a play-off match to Bosnia and Herzegovina, marking their third consecutive absence from the World Cup.

Speaking to Financial Times, Paolo Zampolli said, "I confirm I have suggested to Trump and Infantino that Italy replace Iran at the World Cup. I'm an Italian native and it would be a dream to see the Azzurri at a US-hosted tournament. With four titles, they have the pedigree to justify inclusion."

Iran national football team, meanwhile, has confirmed it is ready to compete. The team is scheduled to play matches against New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt during the group stage. They are pooled in Group G. Despite earlier concerns over safety following military tensions, Iranian officials have now stated they are fully prepared to participate.

Under FIFA rules, the governing body has the authority to replace a team if necessary. However, such a move would only happen under exceptional circumstances. For now, Iran will remain part of the World Cup. FIFA continues to emphasize sporting merit over political influence.
