In the past six months, the Kodagu district has reported eight fatalities resulting from wild elephant attacks, highlighting the escalating human-elephant conflict in the region. The first death of the year occurred on January 1, when 61-year-old Ponnappa was killed in an elephant attack at Sangayyanapura in Ganagur Gram Panchayat near Shanthalli. Since that tragic incident, the death toll has steadily climbed.
Rising Death Toll Raises Alarm
Local authorities and wildlife officials are increasingly concerned about the frequency of these attacks. The deaths have been reported from various parts of the district, with victims often caught off guard while working in fields or traveling through forested areas. The recurring incidents have sparked demands for better mitigation measures to protect both humans and elephants.
Community Impact and Safety Measures
The community in Kodagu has expressed fear and frustration over the lack of effective action. Residents are calling for enhanced fencing, early warning systems, and faster response teams to prevent further loss of life. Wildlife experts emphasize the need for a balanced approach that ensures the safety of local populations while conserving elephant habitats.
As the death toll continues to rise, the state government faces pressure to implement long-term solutions. The situation remains critical, with authorities urging people to remain vigilant and avoid venturing into elephant corridors, especially during dawn and dusk hours.
