Drunk Scooter Rider, 4 Others Booked for Assaulting Traffic Constable

Mumbai: The Khar police have registered a case against five individuals, including three women, for allegedly obstructing government work, assaulting, and threatening a public servant. The incident occurred on May 10 when a drunken scooter rider and his accomplices allegedly assaulted a traffic constable in Khar West.

Incident Details

The incident took place in the Khar Danda locality. The accused, Dharmenath Chimbaikar (43), who was intoxicated, allegedly assaulted police constable Anil Mahajan (32), attached to the Bandra Traffic Department, along with his accomplices.

Constable Mahajan was deployed to manage traffic from Turner Road to Carter Road, Khar West, from 3 pm to 11 pm on Saturday. At around 6:30 pm, while patrolling the Khala Maidan area in Khardanda, a scooter bearing registration number MH-02-FZ-9201 allegedly hit the constable's bike. Mahajan stopped the rider and questioned him, during which the rider allegedly admitted to consuming alcohol.

Escalation of Events

When the constable asked him to pull aside, the rider allegedly called some people on his mobile phone. Shortly after, three women and another man arrived at the scene and allegedly began abusing the policeman, accusing him of demanding money. As the situation escalated, Mahajan dialed 100 and sought assistance.

One of the women allegedly pulled Mahajan's uniform, causing a button to break. The complaint further stated that the woman also assaulted Mahajan with her hands, while the others allegedly abused and threatened him.

Arrests and Legal Action

With the help of the Khar Beat Marshal and additional police personnel, all the accused were taken into custody and brought to the Khar Police Station. Police said Chimbaikar underwent a breathalyser test, which allegedly detected 42.1 mg of alcohol per 100 ml in his body. Additionally, it was found that he did not possess a driving license.

A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including obstructing government work, assault, and criminal intimidation. The accused are currently in police custody, and further investigation is underway.
