Simon Doull Issues Caution to Rising IPL Star Vaibhav Sooryavanshi
The meteoric rise of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in the Indian Premier League 2026 season has catapulted the 15-year-old from Samastipur, Bihar, into the national spotlight, making him one of the most discussed young cricketers in India. His sensational form on the field has been matched by a surge in off-field attention, including endorsement deals and media hype. However, amid this whirlwind of success, former New Zealand fast bowler Simon Doull has delivered a timely warning, urging caution about the influences surrounding the teenage prodigy.
Doull's Concerns Over Management and Career Longevity
Sooryavanshi first captured widespread acclaim with an explosive performance in the Under-19 World Cup final against England, and his profile has only soared since. Speaking on Cricbuzz, Doull expressed apprehension about the people flocking to the young batter at this critical juncture. "It is a word of caution. He already is a bit of a superstar. If things carry on, we all hope he will continue to be a superstar, an Indian superstar, in white-ball cricket in particular. It's the people you surround yourself with. He would have had every management company looking for him and trying to find deals for him," Doull remarked.
He emphasized that those managing Sooryavanshi must prioritize his long-term development over immediate financial benefits. Doull highlighted a common issue in the sports industry, noting, "Management companies and management people are there to look after you. Too many of them only think about looking out for themselves. How much can I make of this young man? How much can my company make of this young man? That's the biggest issue I have with management companies worldwide."
Sooryavanshi's On-Field Brilliance and Recent Setback
On the cricket pitch, Sooryavanshi has lived up to the hype with remarkable displays. In IPL 2026, he has already notched two half-centuries, each achieved at a breathtaking pace of just 15 balls. This follows his record-breaking century last season, where he smashed the fastest hundred by an Indian in the tournament, reaching the milestone in only 35 balls against the Gujarat Titans.
However, his first stumble this season occurred on Monday when he was dismissed for a golden duck by Sunrisers Hyderabad pacer Praful Hinge. Despite this minor blip, his overall impact remains substantial, underscoring his potential as a future star.
Doull's Advice on Navigating Fame and External Pressures
Doull reiterated the importance of vigilance against external influences, advising Sooryavanshi to ensure he is surrounded by individuals genuinely invested in his growth. "They all worry about what they can make, not how well I should be looking out for this young man? How much should I be looking out for his career? And not making him do much at this point. The longevity should be there. If you stop performing, they would go be chasing the next bloke because that's what managers do," he stated.
He added a note of caution, "Just be careful who you surround yourself with. If he's got a good family and upbringing, he would be okay. But just watch out for the sharks." This advice comes as Sooryavanshi navigates the complexities of sudden fame and commercial opportunities.
Rajasthan Royals' Defeat and Match Highlights
In related IPL action, Rajasthan Royals suffered their first loss of the season on Monday, falling to Sunrisers Hyderabad after a streak of four consecutive victories. Batting first, Sunrisers Hyderabad set a formidable total of 216/6, with captain Ishan Kishan leading the charge with a brilliant 91. In response, Rajasthan Royals were bowled out for 159.
Debutant pacer Praful Hinge made an immediate impact, claiming three wickets in his very first over, including the prized dismissal of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for a golden duck. Rajasthan found themselves in deep trouble at 9/5 early on, before a fighting century partnership between Donovan Ferreira and Ravindra Jadeja helped them recover somewhat to reach 159.
As the IPL season progresses, all eyes will remain on young talents like Sooryavanshi, balancing on-field excellence with off-field wisdom to sustain their careers in the competitive world of cricket.
