David Warner Re-Signs with Sydney Thunder for BBL16, Vows Stronger Campaign
David Warner Commits to Sydney Thunder for Another BBL Season

In a significant boost for the Sydney Thunder, former Australian cricketer David Warner has confirmed his commitment to play another season in the Big Bash League. This announcement comes after Warner scored over 400 runs in two successive BBL seasons, showcasing his enduring prowess in the T20 format.

Warner's Excitement and Commitment

Expressing his enthusiasm, Warner stated, "I'm really excited to commit to another season with Thunder." He acknowledged the challenges faced by the team in the previous season, noting, "It was certainly a challenging year for us, we are a much better team than what we put on the field this season and were unable to put a consistent game together." Warner credited the unwavering support from fans as a key factor in his decision to stay, emphasizing his desire to contribute more to the team and the game.

Reviewing and Planning for BBL16

Warner revealed that the team has already begun reviewing the past season and implementing plans to ensure a stronger performance in BBL16. "We've already begun reviewing the season and putting the right plans in place to ensure we deliver a much stronger campaign in BBL16," he said in a statement released on Friday. This proactive approach highlights Warner's leadership and dedication to turning around the Thunder's fortunes.

Warner's Impressive T20 Career

With a tally of 14,028 runs in T20 cricket worldwide, David Warner remains one of the most prolific run-scorers in the format. His career includes 110 T20Is for Australia, where he amassed 3,277 runs at an average of 33.47 and a strike rate of 142.47. Additionally, Warner has played 112 Tests and 161 ODIs, contributing to multiple world title wins for Australia.

BBL Performance and Legacy

Despite being unsold in the IPL mega auction last year, Warner has continued to excel in the Big Bash League. This season, he achieved his second consecutive tally of over 400 runs for the Sydney Thunder, even as the team finished last in the league. By recommitting for another season, Warner will join an elite group of players, including Brad Hogg and Brad Hodge, who have played in the BBL post the age of 40.

Thunder Management's Response

Trent Copeland, Thunder General Manager, welcomed Warner's decision, stating, "We're stoked that Davey is staying on for another season." He praised Warner as one of the greatest T20 players over the last 15 years, highlighting his elite fitness levels and leadership drive. "His hunger and his drive as a leader to improve upon a disappointing season for the squad is as strong as ever," Copeland added.

Warner's International Retirement and Comeback Desire

Warner retired from Test cricket in 2024 after his last match against Pakistan at the Sydney Cricket Ground. He also announced his ODI retirement in January 2024 and retired from international cricket in June 2024 following Australia's exit from the T20 World Cup. However, Warner has expressed openness to a Test comeback if needed, telling News Corp, "I'm always available, just got to pick up the phone." This reflects his ongoing passion for the game.

IPL and Global T20 Achievements

In the Indian Premier League, Warner has played 184 matches, scoring 6,565 runs at an average of 40.52 and a strike rate of 139.77. As part of the IPL-winning Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2016, he is currently the fourth player globally to surpass 14,000 runs in T20 cricket, underscoring his status as a T20 legend.
