CSK's Fleming Targets Brevis Return for Delhi Clash After Injury

CSK Coach Fleming Eyes Brevis Comeback for Crucial Delhi Clash

Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming has voiced cautious optimism regarding the impending return of young batting sensation Dewald Brevis, who has been sidelined for the first three matches of IPL 2026 due to a troublesome side strain. Fleming emphasized that the franchise has adopted a deliberately conservative approach to his rehabilitation, with the clear target being his availability for their next fixture against the Delhi Capitals on April 11 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Conservative Recovery Strategy Amid Early Season Struggles

"We hope he [Dewald Brevis] is going to be right for the next game," Fleming stated in a post-match press conference. "We have five days between the next game. We have been conservative, and hopefully, these next five days will go as well as we have planned, and he is ready to go. It's a big loss, but we are looking forward to getting him back."

The absence of Brevis has undeniably disrupted CSK's team balance and contributed to their challenging start to the season, with the franchise suffering defeats in all three of their opening encounters. The South African batter, who joined CSK as a replacement player during IPL 2025, emerged as a rare bright spot in an otherwise disappointing campaign last year. In just six innings, he amassed 225 runs at an explosive strike rate of 180, including 17 massive sixes, prompting the management to retain him for the 2026 edition with plans to slot him into the crucial middle-order role once fully fit.

Positive Signs in the Nets and Reflecting on Recent Defeat

Encouragingly, there have been visible signs of progress in Brevis' recovery. Ahead of CSK's recent clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the young prodigy spent considerable time batting in the nets and even faced throwdowns from assistant coach Rajiv Kumar, strongly indicating that his return to competitive action may be imminent.

Fleming also took time to reflect on CSK's latest defeat, a high-scoring affair where a strong start ultimately slipped away in the final overs. He pinpointed Tim David's explosive finishing as the pivotal phase that wrestled the game away from CSK's grasp. "The real turning point was the Tim David in the back end, the acceleration he did through the last sort of five overs," Fleming told reporters.

RCB posted a daunting total of 250 for 3, powered significantly by David's blistering unbeaten 70 off just 25 balls, complemented by impactful contributions from Devdutt Padikkal and skipper Rajat Patidar. Fleming felt CSK had created opportunities earlier in the innings but failed to capitalize, eventually losing their shape and composure during the death overs—a phase that also negatively impacted their subsequent batting approach.

"Some good things early on, we created some chances. We unfortunately just couldn't get a couple more wickets for our efforts, and then we hung in, and then unfortunately just lost our shape in the back end," Fleming elaborated. "It was a good wicket, and I think if we'd just been able to hold our nerve and execute a bit better, 210, 220 would have been in our grasp. But we just got a little bit shell-shocked and that flowed through into the early parts of batting as well."

Looking Ahead with Renewed Hope

Despite fighting knocks from Sarfaraz Khan, Prashant Veer, and Jamie Overton, CSK ultimately fell short, bowled out for 207 to suffer their third consecutive loss. However, with Dewald Brevis now nearing a much-anticipated return and valuable lessons learned from these early setbacks, the Chennai Super Kings will be looking to reset quickly and mount a strong comeback when they take the field next against the Delhi Capitals. The team's fortunes could see a significant upturn with the reintegration of their dynamic middle-order batter.
