Cricket Set to Return to Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium After Government Approval

In a significant development for cricket fans in Karnataka, the state cabinet has officially approved the resumption of matches at the iconic M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. This decision comes after a thorough review by government-appointed expert committees and paves the way for the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), to host their Indian Premier League (IPL) home games at the venue once again.

Government Approval Follows Expert Committee Recommendations

The approval was granted on Thursday, following a recommendation from an expert committee headed by Maheshwar Rao, the chief of the Greater Bengaluru Authority. This move comes after the home department had issued a conditional nod on January 17, setting the stage for the cabinet's final decision.

Law Minister H K Patil, speaking after the cabinet meeting, stated, "Keeping in mind the D’Cunha Committee report and the recommendations of the expert committee, the home department will issue a detailed order outlining the conditions that KSCA must meet." This indicates that the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) will need to adhere to specific safety and infrastructure requirements to ensure the smooth conduct of matches.

Background: The Tragic Stampede and Subsequent Ban

The state government had previously barred KSCA from staging matches at Chinnaswamy Stadium after a tragic incident on June 4, 2025. During RCB's IPL victory celebrations, a stampede outside the venue resulted in the loss of 11 lives. This led to a comprehensive review of safety measures and infrastructure at the stadium.

The Justice D’Cunha Committee had recommended 17 safety measures, classified into short-term and long-term requirements, with a deadline set for March 15. These measures were crucial in the government's decision-making process.

Progress on Safety and Infrastructure Upgrades

Earlier in the day, Home Minister G Parameshwara held a two-hour meeting with representatives from KSCA, RCB, and officials from the government-appointed panel. It is reported that the Rao-led committee expressed satisfaction with the progress made on safety, security, and infrastructure upgrades at the stadium.

This positive assessment played a key role in the cabinet's approval, as it demonstrated that the necessary steps were being taken to prevent future incidents and ensure a secure environment for fans and players alike.

Implications for the Upcoming IPL Season

With the IPL expected to begin on March 26, this government greenlight is timely. Traditionally, the defending champions host both the opening ceremony and the first match of the season. Therefore, RCB is now poised to welcome fans back to M Chinnaswamy Stadium for what promises to be an exciting start to the tournament.

The return of cricket to this historic venue marks a new chapter for Bengaluru's sports scene, balancing the thrill of the game with enhanced safety protocols. Fans can look forward to cheering on their team in a stadium that has undergone significant improvements to meet the highest standards of security and comfort.
