Former Indian cricketer and commentator Aakash Chopra has strongly advocated for the immediate selection of Shreyas Iyer into the national T20I team. This comes after young batter Tilak Varma was ruled out of the initial matches against New Zealand due to an abdominal injury.
Chopra's Clear Choice for the Middle Order
With a crucial slot now available in India's middle order ahead of a busy white-ball schedule and the impending T20 World Cup, Chopra believes the selection committee has a straightforward decision to make. He took to social media platform X to state his case unequivocally.
"Who can it be? Shreyas Iyer. 'Sarpanch' sahab should be picked automatically," Chopra declared. He highlighted Iyer's current form, noting his performances in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Chopra also referenced the batter's previous omission from the Asia Cup squad, which he felt was slightly unfair, though understandable at the time.
Emphasizing the need for a specialist in that position, Chopra added, "India does not need an opener. So no Ruturaj Gaikwad, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill. India need a middle-order batter." He pointed to Iyer's vast experience and his explosive record in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as key reasons why he fits the bill perfectly for the role.
Assessing the Alternative Options
While firmly backing Iyer as his primary choice, Chopra did acknowledge other potential candidates for the vacancy. He mentioned Rajasthan Royals' Riyan Parag as a possible contender, citing his previous inclusion in the T20I setup and his additional skill of bowling.
"If India is looking for a multi-skilled player, Parag could be that guy," Chopra observed. However, he was clear in his hierarchy, stating, "But my vote is for Shreyas Iyer. I would place Parag at No.2."
On the topic of wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma, Chopra suggested his chances were slimmer, as the Indian squad likely does not require a third wicketkeeping option at the moment.
Tilak Varma's Road to Recovery
The opportunity arose due to the unfortunate injury to rising star Tilak Varma. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) provided a medical update, confirming that Varma underwent surgery for an abdominal issue in Rajkot on Wednesday, January 7.
The left-handed batter was discharged from the hospital on Thursday morning and was scheduled to return to his home city of Hyderabad on Friday. The BCCI stated that Varma is currently stable and his recovery is progressing well.
As the Indian team management and selectors ponder their next move, Chopra's argument presents a compelling case for reinstating a proven and in-form performer like Shreyas Iyer to bolster the middle order for the challenges ahead.
