Aakash Chopra Warns Gujarat Titans Over Top-Order Dependence and Buttler's Form
Chopra: Gujarat Titans Face IPL 2026 Challenges with Batting

Aakash Chopra Raises Alarm Over Gujarat Titans' Batting Vulnerabilities Ahead of IPL 2026

Former Indian cricketer and prominent analyst Aakash Chopra has issued a stark warning to the Gujarat Titans franchise, pinpointing critical weaknesses in their batting lineup as they prepare for the upcoming IPL 2026 season. In a detailed assessment, Chopra highlighted the team's excessive dependence on their top-order batsmen and the concerning lack of form from star opener Jos Buttler as potential trouble spots that could derail their campaign.

Overreliance on Top-Order Trio Could Prove Costly

Chopra emphasized that while the Titans enjoyed a successful run to the IPL 2025 playoffs, where they ultimately fell to the Mumbai Indians in the Eliminator match, their strategy remains heavily skewed toward their top three batsmen. The team's performance last season was largely powered by exceptional contributions from Sai Sudharsan, who amassed 759 runs, captain Shubman Gill with 650 runs, and Jos Buttler who added 538 runs to the tally.

In a comprehensive YouTube analysis, Chopra explained the inherent risks of this approach. "What are their weaknesses? They can be called weaknesses or challenges. A slight overdependence is still seen on the top three," Chopra stated. "It's great if they replicate what they did last year, which means the top three together bat till the 14th or 15th over, and at least one of them should 100 per cent be there till the 15th over. You should only be one down by the 14th or 15th over."

Jos Buttler's Concerning Form Slump

The analyst expressed particular concern about English batsman Jos Buttler's recent performances, describing his current form as "very, very pedestrian" compared to his established international standards. Chopra noted that Buttler's struggles have been evident in recent tournaments, including a disappointing showing at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 hosted in India and Sri Lanka, where the explosive opener managed just 87 runs across eight matches.

"We have not seen Jos Buttler playing more ordinary than this in any World Cup edition. He was seen struggling in good conditions this time," Chopra observed. "So will that be a bit of an issue for the Gujarat Titans? You want to start with Jos Buttler, but what if the form isn't good? Both openers can't score runs every time."

Strategic Implications for IPL 2026 Campaign

Chopra's analysis suggests that the Titans face significant strategic challenges as they approach the new season. The team's success has been built around their top-order batsmen carrying the scoring burden deep into innings, but this approach becomes vulnerable when key players like Buttler experience form slumps. The former cricketer stressed that expecting both openers to consistently deliver big scores is unrealistic, creating pressure on the middle order to step up when required.

The Gujarat Titans are scheduled to begin their IPL 2026 campaign on March 31 with an opening match against Punjab Kings at the PCA Stadium in New Chandigarh. As the team prepares for this crucial encounter, management will need to address these batting concerns identified by Chopra to mount a serious challenge for the championship title.

Chopra's insights highlight the delicate balance IPL franchises must maintain between relying on star players and developing contingency plans for when those players underperform. With the tournament format demanding consistent excellence across multiple matches, the Titans' ability to either revive Buttler's form or develop alternative batting strategies could determine their fortunes in the upcoming season.
