DT Chandrasekar's Stunning Seven-Wicket Haul Propels Sea Hawks CC to Dominance
In a remarkable display of spin bowling, left-arm spinner DT Chandrasekar delivered a fiery performance, claiming seven crucial wickets to help Sea Hawks CC bowl out SKM CC for a mere 77 runs before lunch on the opening day of the final-round match in the TNCA first division league. The thrilling encounter took place at the Tagore Medical College Cricket Ground on Wednesday, showcasing Chandrasekar's exceptional skills and strategic mastery on the pitch.
Record-Breaking Figures and Milestone Achievement
Chandrasekar's impressive bowling figures of 13 overs, 3 maidens, 29 runs, and 7 wickets not only decimated the opposition but also elevated his season tally to an outstanding 63 wickets, securing his position as the leading wicket-taker in the league. En route to this feat, he achieved a significant personal milestone by completing 500 wickets in the first division league. The landmark moment occurred when he trapped SKM CC captain S Swaminathan for just 8 runs, adding to his growing legacy in Tamil Nadu cricket.
With this achievement, Chandrasekar becomes only the second player this season to reach the 500-wicket mark, following left-arm spinner R Aushik Srinivas. His consistent performance throughout the season has been a testament to his dedication and hard work, making him a standout figure in the domestic cricket circuit.
Journey of Improvement and Guidance
Hailing from Arani town in Tiruvallur, the 33-year-old spinner attributes his recent success to the guidance he received from a former Tamil Nadu cricketer three years ago. "Feeling very happy as not many have achieved this," Chandrasekar expressed in an interview. "Three years ago, when I was playing for Jolly Rovers CC, I worked extensively with Ramkumar, who has played for TN, on mastering variations like over-spin and top-spin."
He further elaborated on his transformation, noting that earlier in his career, his wicket-taking was limited to around 30 or 40 per season. However, in the last three years, he has consistently picked 50 to 60 wickets annually. "I kept practising what I learnt in my day-to-day training, and that has helped me get better results," said Chandrasekar, who initially began his cricket journey as a medium pacer before transitioning to spin bowling.
Comeback and Future Aspirations
Chandrasekar made a notable comeback to the Tamil Nadu senior side last domestic season after nearly a decade, but he expressed disappointment over both his individual performance and the team's results. "Injuries to Ajith Ram and Sai Kishore helped me get a chance. Both of them were performing well, and I couldn't break in earlier," he explained. "Age is also a factor, as coaches and selectors are focusing on grooming the next generation. But I kept playing, hoping that someday I would get an opportunity."
Reflecting on his return, he added, "After almost 10 years, I came in with the intention of doing well for the team and making a comeback. But both as a team and individually, we didn't do well, and it was a sad feeling." Despite these setbacks, Chandrasekar remains optimistic about the future and is determined to make the most of upcoming opportunities.
Aiming to Shed Labels and Enhance Performance
Looking ahead, Chandrasekar is keen to dispel the notion that he is effective only on spinning tracks. "I've often been told that I get wickets only on spinning tracks, so with TNCA planning matches at neutral venues this season, I want to shed that tag," he stated. The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association has plans to select 60 players and conduct matches, providing a platform for players like Chandrasekar to showcase their skills in varied conditions.
He emphasized his commitment to improving his first-class performance, saying, "If I get that opportunity, I want to come back and enhance my game." With his recent milestone and unwavering determination, DT Chandrasekar continues to be a pivotal figure in Tamil Nadu cricket, inspiring aspiring cricketers with his journey of perseverance and excellence.
