THENI: Two workers were killed in a blast at a firecracker unit in Cumbum, Theni district, on Saturday. The deceased were identified as Dinesh, also known as Deena, 23, and Surya Prabhu, 21, both residents of Cumbum.
Incident Details
According to police sources, the firecracker unit was operating at Kattupallivasal Street in Cumbum. Around 9:30 am, the workers reportedly opened a chemical mixing room within the unit after it had been closed for a week. The room, which was designed to be opened slowly, was opened faster than intended, triggering a sudden blast. The explosion resulted in the immediate death of the two workers, and no one else was injured.
Emergency Response
Upon receiving information, police, fire, and rescue personnel from Uthamapalayam and Cumbum stations rushed to the spot. They managed to douse the fire within 30 minutes. The bodies were recovered and sent to Theni Government Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
Investigation Underway
A case has been registered by the Cumbum North Police, and further investigation is in progress. Preliminary investigations revealed that the unit, named Lakshmi Fireworks, was licensed under the name Muthulakshmi.
Previous Incident
It is recalled that a blast at a firecracker manufacturing unit in Kattanarpatti, Virudhunagar, on Sunday, April 19, claimed 25 lives and left six injured.
