Bengaluru Stadium Gets Conditional Nod for IPL Matches

Bengaluru's Iconic Cricket Venue Clears Major Hurdle

Months of speculation have finally ended. The Karnataka government has given conditional approval for international and Indian Premier League matches to return to Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium. This decision comes after extensive safety reviews following last year's tragic stampede.

Government Sets Strict Conditions

On Saturday, the state's home department wrote to the Bengaluru police commissioner. They granted permission with specific terms. The stadium must comply with all government safety requirements before hosting any matches.

The iconic venue has been empty since June 4. That day, a stampede occurred outside during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL title celebrations. Since then, officials have denied permission for matches, even without spectators.

KSCA Faces Tight Deadline

The Karnataka State Cricket Association must now act quickly. They need to fulfill all safety, security, and infrastructural requirements. The IPL season starts on March 26, making the coming weeks critical.

KSCA officials expressed confidence in meeting the conditions. "We are confident of fulfilling all stipulated conditions," the association stated in a press release. "We have presented a detailed compliance roadmap and remain fully committed to implementing all safety measures."

Contingency Plans Were Ready

While waiting for permission, RCB prepared backup options. The franchise explored alternative venues in case Bengaluru remained unavailable. They held discussions with the Chhattisgarh government about hosting matches in Raipur. They also looked at stadiums in Maharashtra, including Pune and Navi Mumbai.

RCB officials have not commented publicly. However, sources indicate KSCA will likely meet with the franchise on Monday to discuss next steps.

Expert Committee Reviews Progress

Last month, the government formed an expert review committee. Greater Bengaluru Authority chief M Maheshwar Rao heads this panel. Earlier this week, committee members visited KSCA. They met secretary Santosh Menon and other officials. The panel reviewed timelines for completing required work.

After the June incident, Justice D Cunha submitted a report with 17 safety recommendations. KSCA says 15 recommendations are feasible. Work on these has already begun. The association claims compliance with Bescom and health department norms. They have set March 15 as the deadline for remaining work.

Four Key Conditions Must Be Met

The home department's approval letter lists four important conditions:

  1. KSCA must implement all Cunha committee recommendations
  2. The association must meet all requirements for hosting international matches
  3. KSCA must cooperate fully with monitoring authorities
  4. Permission may be reviewed if work deviates from approved plans

The letter states approval was granted based on verified progress. Relevant government agencies expressed satisfaction with steps taken so far.

Crowd Capacity Decision Pending

With civil work still ongoing inside the stadium, the government has postponed decisions about spectator numbers. The current capacity stands at approximately 33,000. Officials will reassess this number once all work is complete.

Other Franchises Show Interest

Uncertainty remains about whether RCB can host all home matches in Bengaluru. However, sources reveal at least three other IPL franchises have expressed interest. They would like to play some matches at the Chinnaswamy Stadium if it becomes available.

This development marks a significant step forward for Bengaluru's cricket community. Fans eagerly await the return of competitive cricket to their beloved stadium. All eyes now turn to KSCA as they race against time to meet the government's conditions.
