Bengaluru's Iconic Cricket Stadium Faces Safety Hurdles Before Reopening

A Tragic Incident Led to the Stadium's Closure
The famous Test match venue has been closed to cricket since June 4 last year. This shutdown followed a devastating stampede. The incident occurred during Royal Challengers Bangalore's IPL victory parade. It resulted in the tragic loss of 11 lives. This event raised serious alarms about crowd management and the safety of the stadium's infrastructure.
"Based on the Justice D'Cunha report, we gave Karnataka State Cricket Association a set of safety recommendations," Parameshwara explained. "These were mandatory. They included both short-term and long-term safety guidelines."
Conditional Approval Granted After KSCA Assurances
The Home Minister revealed that the government recently held discussions with the new office-bearers of the KSCA. The cricket association urged officials to consider reopening the stadium. In response, they provided firm assurances.
"They gave us assurances that short-term recommendations would be implemented," Parameshwara stated. "Based on this, the cabinet extended conditional approval to host matches."
However, he was quick to emphasize that this approval is not final. It remains subject to a thorough on-ground verification process.
Final Inspection Will Determine Stadium's Fate
"A final inspection will be conducted," Parameshwara insisted. "Its purpose is to check if short-term measures have indeed been fulfilled. If they are, the stadium will be allowed to host matches."
When asked if the government would withdraw approval if inspectors found deficiencies, the Minister suggested this scenario was unlikely. He cited written assurances received from the KSCA as a key reason for his confidence.
"KSCA had urged us to grant approval since IPL matches begin in March," he noted. "Moreover, they have assured us in writing that they will implement the guidelines. We have provided approval in good faith."
Government Acknowledges Public Pressure
Parameshwara openly acknowledged the broader pressures involved in clearing major sporting events. He admitted it becomes particularly difficult when these events hold significant public interest.
"It is a responsibility of the government as well to not disappoint fans," he said, highlighting the delicate balance between safety and public expectation.
Safety Work Already Underway at the Venue
The Minister confirmed that work has already begun at the stadium. Structural changes are currently underway. These changes directly address the safety concerns highlighted in the official report.
"The old gates have been removed," Parameshwara reported. "Changes are being incorporated to make the stadium match fit. We are confident they will implement the guidelines."
