Belgium's Key Players Limited to Sub Roles Against New Zealand
Belgium head coach Rudi Garcia has confirmed that winger Jeremy Doku and striker Romelu Lukaku are not yet ready to play a full 90 minutes in the team's decisive FIFA World Cup 2026 league stage match against New Zealand on Thursday. The 2018 bronze medalists must win to secure their spot in the round of 32 after consecutive draws against Egypt (1-1) and Iran (0-0).
Doku's Recent Return and Fitness Concerns
Doku returned to the squad on Tuesday after a brief absence due to the birth of his son. He played in the draw against Egypt but missed the Iran match because of breathing issues during training. Garcia noted that Doku had not trained for seven days, limiting his stamina. "Jeremy came back three days ago. So, he only participated in the practice today. He did a little more, but he did not train for seven days, and that is not insignificant," Garcia told reporters, as quoted by Reuters. "So, we're thrilled to have him back. He is probably not going to play for 90 minutes. But we know that he can make a difference once on the pitch."
Lukaku's Goal Drought and Limited Minutes
Romelu Lukaku, who has yet to score in the tournament, will also face restrictions. Garcia stated, "Lukaku cannot handle 90 minutes. If he starts, he will be substituted. If he does not start, he can help us from the bench. But he is fit." The coach emphasized that Belgium's strength lies in collective effort rather than individual players: "But all our game is not based upon one player. It is the collective spirit. That is the true force of Belgium."
Defender Urges Intensity Against Bottom-Placed New Zealand
Belgium defender Brandon Mechele stressed the importance of matching New Zealand's intensity. New Zealand sits at the bottom of the group with just one point. "We need to match their intensity. If we manage that, I don't see a problem for us," Mechele said. Belgium will rely on a strong team performance to overcome their key players' fitness limitations and advance in the tournament.
