BCCI Counters Shami's Narrative on Communication Gap
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially rebutted fast bowler Mohammed Shami's claims of being kept in the dark about his non-selection for the national team. This development casts a shadow over the seasoned pacer's future in international cricket, despite his recent performances in domestic circuit.
The Fitness Conundrum: Selectors' Primary Concern
According to a senior BCCI official who spoke to PTI, the national selection committee was, in fact, desperate to secure Shami's services for the Test series in England. The need became more acute as star pacer Jasprit Bumrah was reportedly limited to playing only three Tests. The official revealed that selectors and support staff from the BCCI's Centre of Excellence made multiple calls to check on the bowler's status.
Furthermore, a senior member of the selection panel went a step further by sending multiple messages to Shami, inquiring about the 35-year-old's fitness and even requesting him to play at least one India A match against England Lions. Shami's response, however, was that he needed more time to build his workload and should not be considered for the England series.
Ranji Performance vs. Fitness Metrics
Shami, who has been sidelined with a chronic heel issue since the 2023 World Cup, made a much-publicized return through the ongoing Ranji Trophy. Playing for Bengal, he has bowled over 93 overs and impressed many with his wicket-taking ability. However, the PTI report highlights significant concerns that are keeping the selectors wary.
It has been noted that Shami has not been bowling long spells for Bengal, often limiting himself to short bursts of around four overs and taking frequent breaks. A more alarming drop is in his bowling speed. The pacer, known for consistently clocking 135+ kmph and even touching 140+ in the past, has not crossed the 130 kmph mark in the domestic tournament. These factors have raised serious questions within the selection committee about whether his body can withstand the intense rigours of international cricket.
The official emphasized that the sports science team at the BCCI is actively monitoring his medical reports to make an informed decision. The future of Mohammed Shami, especially in the 50-over format, now hangs in the balance, dependent on a clear demonstration of peak fitness and form that meets the national team's high standards.
