Barcelona Edge Past Albacete in Tense Copa del Rey Quarter-Final
Barcelona secured their place in the Copa del Rey semi-finals with a nervy 2-1 victory over second-division Albacete on Tuesday, in a match that tested the record 32-time cup winners until the final whistle. The Catalan giants, managed by Hansi Flick, were pushed to their limits by a determined Albacete side that had previously eliminated Real Madrid in the competition.
Yamal and Araujo Strike to Give Barcelona Control
The breakthrough came just before half-time when teenage sensation Lamine Yamal curled home a fine effort in the 39th minute. The goal was set up by Frenkie de Jong after Marcus Rashford won possession, allowing Yamal to showcase his talent with a clinical finish.
Early in the second half, Ronald Araujo doubled Barcelona's advantage with a powerful header, marking his first start since returning from a month-long mental health break at the end of last year. This goal seemed to put Barcelona in a comfortable position, but Albacete refused to surrender.
Albacete's Spirited Fightback Creates Late Drama
Despite Barcelona's control in the first half, Albacete created several opportunities in the latter stages. Javi Moreno's powerful header in the 87th minute, from Jose Lazo's free-kick, set up a tense finale as the hosts reduced the deficit to 2-1.
Albacete had earlier seen a goal disallowed for offside when Antonio Puertas found the net with seven minutes remaining, adding to the drama. The home side also threatened through Jefte Betancor, who cut inside and fired just wide, and Puertas, whose volley deflected over the bar.
Barcelona Hold On Amidst Late Pressure
In a frantic finish, Barcelona endured five minutes of stoppage time, with Gerard Martin heading Fran Gamez's effort off the line to preserve the lead. Goalkeeper Joan Garcia also made crucial interventions, including snagging a loose ball after Puertas' heavy touch in the first half.
Barcelona's victory sets up their semi-final berth in the Copa del Rey, while the other quarter-finals see Valencia host Athletic Bilbao, Real Sociedad visit Alaves on Wednesday, and Atletico Madrid travel to face Real Betis on Thursday.
