BCB Seeks T20 World Cup Shift to Sri Lanka, IPL Broadcast Ban After Mustafizur's IPL Axe
Bangladesh Seeks World Cup Venue Shift, IPL Ban After Mustafizur Axed

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has taken a series of aggressive steps following the controversial removal of pacer Mustafizur Rahman from the Indian Premier League (IPL) on instructions from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The moves include formally requesting the International Cricket Council (ICC) to shift Bangladesh's T20 World Cup league matches from India to Sri Lanka and pushing for a suspension of the IPL broadcast within Bangladesh.

Formal Request to ICC and Broadcast Ban Call

Government adviser Asif Nazrul confirmed he has requested the adviser to Bangladesh's Information and Broadcasting Ministry to halt the telecast of the IPL in the country. "I have requested the adviser for Information and Broadcasting to ensure that the broadcast of the IPL in Bangladesh is also suspended," Nazrul stated. He emphasized a firm stance, declaring, "Under no circumstances will we tolerate any insult to Bangladeshi cricket, cricketers, or Bangladesh itself. The days of servitude are over."

In a parallel development, Nazrul, acting as the adviser in charge of the Sports Ministry, instructed the BCB to formally approach the ICC, led by Jay Shah. The request is to relocate Bangladesh's four T20 World Cup league matches—three in Kolkata and one in Mumbai—to Sri Lanka. He argued that if a contracted Bangladeshi player cannot compete in India, the national team's safety during the World Cup could be compromised.

BCB's Disbelief and Awaiting Official Word

Within BCB circles, there is a palpable sense of disbelief over how the situation escalated, especially after India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently attended former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia's funeral in Dhaka, which had fostered a sense of goodwill. A BCB source, speaking anonymously, revealed that the board had announced the schedule for India's upcoming tour of Bangladesh based on this positivity.

"Till now BCCI hasn't communicated anything to BCB officially. Only after official communication will BCB decide further course of action," the source told PTI. The board is seeking an official explanation from the BCCI for the cancellation of Mustafizur Rahman's IPL contract with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), who had bought him for Rs 9.20 crore at last month's auction.

Logistical Hurdles and Political Undercurrents

A BCCI source, however, dismissed the feasibility of shifting World Cup matches with just a month left before the tournament begins in February. "You can't just change games at someone's whims and fancies. It is a logistical nightmare," the source explained, citing pre-booked flights, hotels for opposing teams, and complex broadcast arrangements. Pakistan is already scheduled to play its World Cup matches in Sri Lanka under a pre-existing agreement.

The diplomatic friction occurs against a backdrop of strained Indo-Bangladesh relations following the ouster of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. While the BCCI did not explicitly cite politics for Mustafizur's release, it indicated the decision was linked to recent developments. BCB president Aminul Islam Bulbul refrained from public comment after an emergency board meeting.

Bangladesh's World Cup fixtures are against West Indies (February 7), Italy (February 9), and England (February 14) in Kolkata, with their final group match versus Nepal (February 17) in Mumbai.
