Bangladesh Government Panel Exposes Massive Election Irregularities in Cricket Board

A government-appointed investigation committee in Bangladesh has uncovered extensive irregularities, including systematic vote-rigging, voter coercion, and institutional bias, in the October 2025 Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) elections. The five-member panel, led by former justice AKM Asaduzzaman, submitted its comprehensive report to the sports ministry on Sunday, revealing a deeply flawed electoral process.

Election Process Neither Free Nor Transparent

According to the committee's findings, the BCB election process was neither free nor transparent, with substantial evidence of voter intimidation and multiple procedural violations. The panel noted repeated non-cooperation from top BCB officials during their investigation, including former BCB president Aminul Islam who declined to attend an in-person hearing, opting instead to submit a written response.

Despite these obstacles, the investigation concluded that both BCB officials and individuals within the sports ministry were actively involved in manipulating the election process to achieve predetermined outcomes.

Government Moves to Dissolve BCB Board

At a press conference on Tuesday, National Sports Council (NSC) sports director Mohammed Aminul Ahesan outlined the report's key findings, stating unequivocally that the elections lacked fairness and integrity. "The election process was not free, fair or transparent. Voters were intimidated, and procedural irregularities were rampant," Ahesan declared.

He announced that the government had sufficient grounds to dissolve the Aminul-led BCB board and revealed the 11 members of a new ad hoc committee that will oversee the BCB for the next three months. Notably, former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal, who had accused Aminul of abusing his authority as BCB president just four weeks before last year's election, has been appointed as the new BCB president.

Detailed Findings of Constitutional Violations

The committee's report provided specific examples of manipulation:

  • On March 10, 2026, former councillors complained about district and division sports associations regarding submission deadlines for councillors' names
  • The BCB extended deadlines from September 17 to September 19 and then to September 22 without proper justification
  • The committee determined these extensions were made for ulterior motives to replace previously nominated councillors with preferred individuals

"The committee felt that this deadline was extended without proper reason and for ulterior motives, to replace the previously nominated councillors with preferred individuals and create opportunities for them to be elected as directors," Ahesan explained.

Abuse of Power and Constitutional Violations

The investigation revealed serious constitutional violations by former BCB president Aminul Islam Bulbul:

  1. According to Article 9.3.3 of the BCB Constitution, the President does not have unilateral power to nominate 10 former cricketers as councillors
  2. Aminul Islam Bulbul acted beyond his authority by unilaterally nominating 10 former cricketers as councillors
  3. This constituted a clear abuse of power and violation of the BCB constitution
  4. The committee found this unilateral nomination significantly impacted the election process, providing benefits to Aminul and potentially influencing the election outcome

E-Voting System Manipulated

Serious concerns were raised about the e-voting process, with the committee finding that Aminul and officials from the NSC had manipulated the electronic voting system. This conclusion was supported by voter interviews that described the system as "pre-planned" and fundamentally compromised.

"The committee found that e-voting was conducted from a specific location and the confidentiality of the vote was not maintained, which is against basic democratic principles and the BCB constitution," the report stated.

The investigation revealed that most e-voters were physically present at the polling station on election day but were instead gathered at the Sheraton Hotel in the capital on October 5 for e-voting. "Although there was an opportunity to vote directly, e-voting was conducted by gathering in one place... and the process seemed to the committee to be vote rigging," the report concluded.

The comprehensive investigation has exposed systemic problems in Bangladesh cricket governance, prompting immediate government intervention to restore integrity to the country's cricket administration.
