This decision, announced on Monday, comes as a direct response to the controversial exclusion of Bangladesh's star fast bowler, Mustafizur Rahman, from the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) squad.
Government Steps In, Broadcasts Halted
The Bangladesh Ministry of Information and Broadcasting issued a formal notification to all state-run and private television channels, including Bangladesh Betar. The directive orders the immediate cessation of all IPL match broadcasts and related programming until further notice. The communication was sent to chief executives of channels and the president of the Association of Television Channel Owners.
The government's notification explicitly stated that the people of Bangladesh were left "saddened and angry" by the treatment of their cricketing hero. It highlighted that no satisfactory explanation was provided for Mustafizur Rahman's removal from the KKR team roster. "In this context, a decision has been taken regarding the broadcast of IPL matches," the notification concluded. Information and Broadcasting Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan had earlier indicated that any such move would follow a review of legal grounds.
BCB Retaliates, T20 World Cup Venue in Question
The broadcast ban is just one part of a broader retaliatory stance from Bangladesh. In a significant move that threatens to upend international cricket schedules, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) decided on Sunday not to send its national team to India for the upcoming T20 World Cup. The global tournament is scheduled to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, commencing on February 7.
Following an emergency meeting, the BCB has formally requested the International Cricket Council (ICC) to relocate Bangladesh's matches to a venue outside India. The board cited security concerns "under the current circumstances" as the primary reason for this unprecedented request. This decision directly ties the bilateral sporting friction to a major multinational event.
