Ayush Mhatre Attributes Leadership Growth to MS Dhoni's Mentorship at Chennai Super Kings
It has been two transformative years since young batter Ayush Mhatre embarked on his journey with the Chennai Super Kings, and sharing the dressing room with the legendary MS Dhoni has elevated his game to unprecedented heights. In a candid reflection, Mhatre spoke extensively about the profound influence Dhoni has exerted on his burgeoning career, crediting the iconic captain for honing his leadership abilities—a factor that proved instrumental in India's triumphant Under-19 World Cup campaign earlier this year.
Dhoni's Calm Guidance Shapes a Young Captain
Mhatre, who skippered India to the U-19 World Cup title, delved into his interactions with Dhoni during IPL 2025, describing them as pivotal to his evolution as a young leader. "Last year, I had the privilege of playing under Mahi bhai. At that time, I was captaining the India U-19 side. After the IPL, I sought his advice on captaincy, as it was my first experience in that role," Mhatre recounted in a video released by the IPL on Tuesday.
"He advised me to maintain composure on the field and avoid making decisions in moments of anger. He emphasized that frustration might arise during opposition partnerships, but if I stay calm, breathe, and wait for that phase to pass, I would be able to make sound decisions," he added, highlighting Dhoni's wisdom in fostering mental resilience.
Dream Realized: From TV Screens to the CSK Dressing Room
The rising star also opened up about fulfilling a long-cherished dream of representing one of the IPL's most successful franchises. "It is a dream to play for a prestigious franchise like CSK. To share the dressing room with Mahi bhai, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Shivam Dube bhai is surreal. Just last year, I was watching them on television, and now I am alongside them—it feels like a dream come true," Mhatre expressed, underscoring the emotional significance of his journey.
Despite being a newcomer to the setup, Mhatre revealed that he felt at home almost immediately, praising the team's familial culture for smoothing his transition. "When I joined last year, it didn't feel like my first time. The environment here is liberating; they live like a family. I enjoy spending time with my teammates, whether in the room or hanging out. Although I am generally shy, I feel completely at ease with them," he shared.
Flexibility and Modern Cricket Dynamics
Discussing his role within the team, Mhatre emphasized adaptability and team contribution over a fixed batting position. "There is no specific role assigned to me. The management encouraged me to back my game, just like last year, without any changes. I focus on watching the ball, playing on merit, and contributing to the team's success as much as possible. I am ready to bat at any position the team requires," he stated, showcasing his team-first attitude.
Mhatre also reflected on the evolving dynamics of modern cricket, noting how the increased tempo has influenced his approach. "I don't necessarily plan to play aggressively, but the T20 format has revolutionized playing styles. Even in ODIs, aggressive cricket has taken precedence. Stroke-making has improved significantly, not just among experienced players but also among young talents emerging in recent years. To get such an opportunity at this age is incredible, and playing for a successful franchise like CSK is a huge honor. There is no room for fear; I will continue playing my natural game," he concluded.
