Ashwin Endorses Sanju Samson for Future CSK Captaincy Role
Veteran India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has publicly endorsed wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson as a potential future captain of the Chennai Super Kings franchise. In a recent interview, Ashwin expressed his belief that Samson could eventually take on the leadership mantle, while strongly advising the player to focus on building his own unique legacy rather than attempting to inherit or replicate someone else's.
The Evolution of CSK's Leadership Structure
Reflecting on the gradual transition of leadership within the Chennai Super Kings setup, Ashwin pointed out that this process has been unfolding over several seasons. He traced the beginnings of this shift back to the period when all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja briefly assumed captaincy responsibilities, even though that particular arrangement did not yield the desired results.
"I think the mantle is already passed on," Ashwin told ESPNCricinfo. "When Jadeja took over the captaincy a few years ago, I think that is when the mantle was likely to be passed on. Didn't quite work out, and then it's been Ruturaj... I think Ruturaj has been running the show for the last 2-3 years along with Fleming."
Ashwin's observations highlight how current skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad has been quietly assuming leadership responsibilities alongside head coach Stephen Fleming, indicating a smooth transition process that has been developing behind the scenes.
Samson's Potential Captaincy Timeline
While Ashwin avoided putting a specific timeframe on when Samson might assume the CSK captaincy, he expressed clear confidence in the possibility. "The mantle passing over, if you ask me, I mean, I'm no astrologer, but all I can tell you is I do see Sanju captaining CSK at some stage. Don't know when, but I do see that happening," the veteran spinner elaborated.
This endorsement comes at a significant moment in Samson's career with CSK, following his acquisition by the franchise ahead of the IPL 2026 auction through a strategic trade arrangement.
The Importance of Forging an Independent Legacy
Perhaps the most compelling aspect of Ashwin's commentary was his emphasis on Samson creating his own leadership identity rather than following in the footsteps of previous CSK captains, particularly the iconic MS Dhoni.
"The one thing I wouldn't want to risk upon or don't want for Sanju is him stepping into anybody's shoes," Ashwin stressed. "You don't have to really step into anybody's legacy. We don't necessarily need to live like that nor play like that. He's got his own unique clothing in which he lives, and I would like to see his own imprint on it."
Ashwin expanded on this philosophy, explaining that the pressure to emulate previous successful leaders can become counterproductive. "The very fact that we need to follow somebody's footsteps is where the issue begins. Then we don't live our lives, right? We start catering to somebody else's footprints. That is something I don't want to see him do," he articulated.
Samson's Current Form and Performance
Meanwhile, Sanju Samson has been demonstrating exactly why Ashwin sees captaincy potential in him through his recent performances. After an initially underwhelming start to the season, the wicketkeeper-batter has dramatically turned his campaign around with some exceptional batting displays.
Samson announced his arrival in spectacular fashion with a stunning unbeaten 115 against Delhi Capitals in CSK's fourth game of the season. He carried that momentum into the subsequent match, delivering a fluent 48 off just 32 deliveries. These performances have not only solidified his position in the team but have also showcased the leadership qualities that Ashwin referenced.
The spotlight will remain firmly on Samson as Chennai Super Kings prepare to face Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium. This upcoming match provides another opportunity for Samson to demonstrate both his batting prowess and the leadership potential that has caught the attention of veteran cricketers like Ashwin.
As the IPL season progresses, the discussion around CSK's future leadership continues to gain momentum. With Ashwin's endorsement adding weight to the conversation, all eyes will be on how Samson continues to develop both as a player and as a potential future leader of one of the most successful franchises in IPL history.
