Ashwin Firmly Opposes Dual India T20I Teams, Stresses National Cap's Prestige
Indian cricket veteran Ravichandran Ashwin has issued a strong rebuttal to suggestions that India could field two separate T20 International teams for overlapping commitments. Speaking on his popular show Ash Ki Baat, the seasoned off-spinner emphasized that the India cap must retain its sacred value and cannot be distributed casually.
Addressing Reports of Split Squads
Ashwin specifically addressed recent reports indicating that India might consider splitting squads for the T20I series against the West Indies (scheduled for October 6–17) and the Asian Games (running from September 19 to October 6). The proposed second-string side would potentially feature emerging IPL talents such as Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Priyansh Arya, and Prabhsimran Singh.
"What is the value of the India cap then? What respect will it have?" Ashwin questioned passionately. "You need a moment of pride to wear the India cap. Why are you playing cricket? Because you are representing so many Indian public, they are watching, everyone praises our cricket, and you wish to debut in front of your fans and play all the formats."
The Devaluation Concern
The cricketer expressed concern about the potential dilution of the national team's prestige. "All of this definitely plays on the mind. It happens a lot now that people are making their debuts somewhere or the other, and people forget about it," he noted, highlighting how frequent debuts in different contexts might diminish their significance.
Instead of creating parallel teams, Ashwin advocated for strengthening the existing India A pathway system to groom emerging talent without compromising the senior team's honor. "There must be a value for the India cap. If you want to give them exposure, send them on India A tours. You cannot just dish out India caps just like that," he asserted.
Proposing Enhanced India A Focus
Ashwin suggested that broadcasting India A tours could provide valuable exposure while maintaining the cap's exclusivity. "Telecast the India A tours as well, people will watch and have fun. But you cannot just distribute India caps for free. It has to be valued," he added, reinforcing his stance on preserving the emotional and symbolic weight of representing the nation.
India's Packed Cricket Calendar
Despite the long-term focus shifting towards the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027, India's schedule after the IPL remains exceptionally busy with T20 cricket. The international season commences with:
- A one-off Test and three ODIs against Afghanistan from June 6 to 20
- A short trip to Ireland for two T20Is from June 26 to 28
- A full-fledged tour of England featuring five T20Is between July 1 and 11, followed by a three-match ODI series
Subsequently, India will head to Zimbabwe for a three-match T20I series from July 23 to 26. Later in the year, they host the West Indies for three ODIs and five T20Is between October 6 and 17. The year concludes with a home series against Sri Lanka, where India will play three ODIs and three T20Is from December 13 to 27, marking the end of a demanding white-ball calendar.
Ashwin's comments come at a critical juncture as Indian cricket balances development with tradition, ensuring that the national cap remains a symbol of ultimate achievement rather than a casually awarded privilege.
