In a match marked by sparse attendance, Afghanistan's cricket team found a solitary but passionate supporter in Khyal Mohammad during the morning session at Mullanpur. By lunchtime, he was joined by a few other Afghan nationals, providing a small but vocal backing for the visiting side.
Khyal Mohammad: A Student and Cricket Enthusiast
Mohammad, originally from Kabul, is currently pursuing his studies at a local university. An avid cricket fan and content creator, he has been following the sport closely. His friend Nangyal Kharoti made his debut for Afghanistan in this match, while Sharifi emerged as the standout performer for the visitors.
Cricket in Afghanistan: Growing Despite Challenges
Speaking about the state of cricket in his home country, Mohammad said, "Both Kharoti and Sharifi play in the Shpageeza Cricket League, Afghanistan's domestic T20 competition. Cricket is mostly played on cemented pitches in colleges or local grounds. However, in recent years, the sport has gained massive attention across various parts of Afghanistan."
He added, "Though Rashid Khan is not playing here, I came to support this young Afghanistan team. I hope to see them play more Test matches in the future."
War and Cricket: A Story of Resilience
When asked about the impact of the ongoing conflict on Afghan youngsters' morale, Mohammad responded, "Cricket has emerged as a big hope for the youth, and that is what makes this sport so popular in Afghanistan. We do not have a world-class stadium in Afghanistan, but war has taught us to accept victory or defeat with a smile."
The Afghan captain also noted that cricket's popularity is rising among Afghans, especially after players began participating in various franchise leagues worldwide.
By evening, the spectator count at the venue had increased to 4,000, indicating a growing interest in the match.
