Abhishek Sharma Discharged from Hospital, India's World Cup Campaign Gets Major Boost

In a significant development for the Indian cricket team, opening batsman Abhishek Sharma was discharged from a hospital in Delhi on Wednesday. This news arrives at a critical juncture as India prepares for their second Group A fixture against Namibia in the ongoing 2026 T20 World Cup.

Health Update and Match Availability Uncertainty

Sharma, who was dismissed for a duck against the United States in India's opening match, had been hospitalized due to a stomach bug. His teammate Tilak Varma provided a crucial update during the pre-match press conference in Delhi.

"When we reached Delhi, he went to the hospital for scans. He was discharged today. He is doing well," Varma stated. However, he added, "We have got one more day to go for the game. We will decide by tomorrow. It will depend on how he feels."

The 25-year-old had played through illness during the match against the USA but failed to score, being dismissed for a two-ball duck. Consequently, he did not take the field during the USA's run chase. His health issues also caused him to leave a team dinner hosted by Gautam Gambhir early on Monday and miss travel with the squad on Wednesday.

Potential Replacement: Sanju Samson's Prospects

Should Sharma be deemed unfit for the Namibia match, Sanju Samson emerges as the likely replacement in the playing XI. The Kerala batsman has faced recent form challenges, scoring only 46 runs from five matches with a strike-rate of 135.29 and an average of 9.20.

Samson lost his spot to Ishan Kishan for the USA match following Kishan's impressive performances against New Zealand and South Africa. However, Samson batted at the nets on Tuesday and worked with batting coach Sitanshu Kotak, indicating potential preparation for the Namibia fixture.

Upcoming Fixtures and Tournament Context

India is scheduled to face Namibia in their second T20 World Cup match in Delhi on Thursday, February 12. Following this crucial encounter, the team has two remaining group stage matches:

  • Against arch-rivals Pakistan on February 15 in Colombo
  • Against the Netherlands on February 18 in Ahmedabad

Sharma's recovery and potential availability provide India with much-needed flexibility and depth as they navigate these critical World Cup matches. The team management will closely monitor his condition before making a final decision on his participation against Namibia.
