Yashaswini Ghorpade Clinches National Table Tennis Title in Indore

In a moment of triumph that extended the festive spirit of Ugadi for her family, Yashaswini Ghorpade from Bengaluru secured the senior National table tennis crown in Indore on Saturday. The 21-year-old paddler emerged victorious in a nail-biting final against Syndrela Das, winning 4-3 to claim the prestigious title.

A Breakthrough Victory After a Difficult Year

This achievement marks Yashaswini as only the third woman from Karnataka to win the national championship, joining the elite ranks of Archana Kamath and Usha Sunderraj. The victory comes as a significant breakthrough following a disappointing 2025 season where she struggled to secure titles both domestically and internationally.

"The atmosphere at home is festive. Everyone is in a joyous mood," Yashaswini shared with reporters after her win. "Last year was disappointing. But this win gives me confidence to prepare better and deliver in upcoming tournaments."

Her persistence through challenging times has finally paid off, transforming what began as a festive celebration into a landmark sporting achievement for her family in Basavanagudi, south Bengaluru.

Immediate Focus on International Competitions

There is little time for extended celebrations as Yashaswini prepares to compete at the WTT Contender in Tunisia starting Tuesday. She intends to use her national crown as a springboard for a demanding season ahead, with her sights set on three major international events in 2026.

Her upcoming challenges include the World Team Championships in London (April 28–May 10), the Commonwealth Championships in New Delhi (July 17–21), and the Asian Games in Japan (September–October).

"It's going to be a big challenge with top players from around the world. The quality will be very high, so I need to improve my game and be better prepared," Yashaswini emphasized, acknowledging the elevated competition she will face on the global stage.

Coach's Assessment and Areas for Improvement

Training under coach Anshuman Roy at the UTT-Skies High Performance Centre in Bengaluru, Yashaswini has demonstrated consistent growth in her game. Roy recognizes her potential for success at the highest levels but identifies specific areas requiring refinement.

"She has a strong backhand, good serves and makes smart decisions during rallies," Roy noted, highlighting her existing strengths.

However, the coach pointed out that opponents frequently target her forehand at elite levels. "We've been working extensively on that — sometimes dedicating two out of three training hours to it. She also needs to build physical strength and improve fitness to compete consistently against top players," Roy explained.

This focused training approach aims to address weaknesses while enhancing her overall competitive edge.

Transition from Promise to Expectation

With the national title now secured, Yashaswini Ghorpade's journey enters a new phase where promise transforms into expectation. Her victory not only celebrates personal achievement but also inspires aspiring table tennis players across Karnataka and India.

As she prepares for international competitions, her story exemplifies the dedication required to excel in professional sports, balancing technical skill development with physical conditioning and mental resilience.
