Historic Selection: Punjab Shuttlers Tanvi Sharma and Dhruv Kapila to Represent India at Thomas & Uber Cup
In a landmark achievement for Punjab's badminton scene, two talented shuttlers from the state have earned spots on the Indian team for the prestigious Thomas and Uber Cup. Dhruv Kapila, aged 26, and Tanvi Sharma, aged 17, will compete in the international tournament, which is set to be held in Denmark from April 24 to May 3. This marks the first time that two players from Punjab have been selected simultaneously for this top-tier badminton event.
Rising Star Tanvi Sharma's Impressive Credentials
Tanvi Sharma, hailing from Hoshiarpur, has already carved out a remarkable career at a young age. She made history by becoming the first Indian to win a medal at the BWF World Junior Championships in October of last year. Additionally, she was the first Indian to secure multiple medals in a single edition of the World Junior Championships, including a bronze in the mixed team event. Following these successes, she ascended to the Junior World No. 1 ranking.
Her achievements extend beyond junior competitions. Tanvi was a key member of the Indian team that clinched gold at the 2024 Asian Team Championships. Recently, she led India to the semi-finals of the Orleans Masters in France, and post-tournament, she achieved a career-high world ranking of No. 34 in women's singles, moving up four places in the latest Badminton World Federation rankings released on Tuesday.
Family Influence and Training Background
Tanvi's introduction to badminton came early, thanks to her mother, Meena Sharma, a former volleyball player. In 2016, Tanvi joined the renowned Gopichand Academy, where her mother also trained as a coach and mentored both her daughters. Tanvi's elder sister, Radhika Sharma, has also excelled in the sport, winning gold in mixed doubles at the All-India Ranking Badminton Tournament 2025 in Hyderabad.
Dhruv Kapila's Journey from Ludhiana
Dhruv Kapila, originating from Ludhiana, brings his own experience and skill to the Indian team. His selection alongside Tanvi highlights the growing talent pool in Punjab's badminton community.
Official Recognition and Future Prospects
Ritin Khanna, secretary of the Punjab Badminton Association, expressed immense pride in the duo's achievement. "Tanvi's graph has been rising each day. We have been supporting her at every step. It is such a proud moment for us as both Tanvi and Dhruv from Punjab have made it to the topmost international badminton tourney," he stated. Tanvi continues to build her reputation as one of India's most promising shuttlers, with her selection for the Thomas and Uber Cup underscoring her potential on the global stage.
The Thomas and Uber Cup, often referred to as the World Team Championships for men and women, respectively, will provide a platform for these young athletes to showcase their talents against the world's best. Their participation not only represents personal milestones but also signals a significant boost for badminton in Punjab and India as a whole.
