Navi Mumbai: Badminton in Maharashtra is set to enter a transformative phase with the launch of the Phoenix Badminton Super League-2026 (BSL), a franchise-based competition that organisers have described as the first of its kind in the state. The league, conducted under the aegis of the Maharashtra Badminton Association, has received significant corporate backing, marking a new format for state-level badminton tournaments.
Owners Meet and Players Auction
The Owners Meet and Greet event recently brought together franchise holders and key stakeholders ahead of the tournament, which is scheduled for May 9 and 10 at the Navi Mumbai Sports Association (NMSA) in Vashi. The players' auction has already drawn significant attention, as franchises built their squads from a pool of talented players across Maharashtra. This competitive bidding process ensured that each team assembled a balanced roster capable of delivering high-quality performances.
Prize Pool and Team Owners
The tournament features a prize pool of Rs 10 lakh, described as the highest prize money ever offered for a badminton tournament of this scale in Maharashtra. Team owners include prominent real estate firms such as Metro Group, Satyam Developers, and Priyanka Regency, along with stationery company DOMS. Defence sector companies Krasny Defence and NDT Technologies have also invested in teams. Phoenix Infracon Solutions, one of India's largest crane rental organisations, serves as the title sponsor, according to organiser and former champion shuttler Shrishail Mitkari.
First Edition Success
The organisers noted that the first edition of the Badminton Super League, held at NMSA last year, emerged as one of Maharashtra's most noteworthy franchise-format badminton leagues. That edition brought together 80 elite players across 10 franchise teams and recorded engagement of over 500 on-ground spectators, with more than 10,000 viewers following the action online. The success of the inaugural event laid the groundwork for the expanded 2026 edition, which promises even greater participation and viewership.
The Phoenix BSL 2026 is expected to elevate the standard of badminton in Maharashtra by providing a professional platform for players and attracting new audiences to the sport. With strong corporate involvement and a substantial prize fund, the league aims to become a cornerstone of the state's sporting calendar.
