April 30, 2026 marked a transformative phase for the Indian Railways with the introduction of the newest Jammu–Srinagar Vande Bharat Express. This journey is being described as a game-changer moment for travel in Jammu & Kashmir. The semi-high-speed train was flagged off by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and will begin regular operations from May 2, 2026. This is the first train in history to connect Jammu Tawi with Srinagar.
A Historic Feat
Before this, Vande Bharat services in the Valley operated only up to Katra. The extension to Jammu Tawi is welcome news for travellers. The train runs on the ambitious Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL). The railway minister called it India's first experience with railway operations at such high altitudes. Omar Abdullah, Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir, called it a historic day.
Reduced Travel Time
The train has reduced travel time to under 5 hours. It will cover the 267-km journey in about 4 hours and 50 minutes, a remarkable improvement compared to the usual road journey which takes over 8 hours.
Great News for Travellers
Sharing a video of the launch, the railway minister posted on X: 'Seamless connectivity strengthening Jammu & Kashmir's growth journey! Flagged off the newly extended 20-coach Vande Bharat Express from Jammu to Srinagar, along with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Ji and Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh Ji.' This means travellers can save time and enjoy reliability. Road travel in Kashmir is often disrupted by landslides and snowfall, among other issues. The Vande Bharat offers a reliable, all-weather alternative.

The train will stop at important stations: Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, Reasi, and Banihal.
