The dramatic rescue unfolded around 6pm at Kunnathuppara Kadavu. Arjun Babu, a 30-year-old native of Manakkad, was visiting his wife's residence when a child from a neighboring house urgently informed him that a woman had been swept into the river. Without a moment's hesitation, Arjun sprang into action.
He rushed to the riverbank and conducted a frantic search along nearly half a kilometre of the shoreline. From near a villa compound, he spotted a hand rising and sinking in the middle of the turbulent river. Relying on his strong swimming abilities, Arjun immediately dove into the water to attempt the rescue.
Perilous Situation for the Elderly Victim
The woman, identified as Santha aged 65, had been washing clothes at the riverbank when she was caught in the powerful current. The dangerous situation arose as she tried to retrieve a clothing item that had drifted away from her grasp. She was being pulled toward one of the river's most hazardous bathing ghats, increasing the risk of tragedy.
By the time Arjun reached her, Santha had lost consciousness after swallowing a significant amount of water. Despite the challenging conditions and strong currents, Arjun managed to pull her to safety and bring her to the opposite bank. Her husband, who had rushed to the scene upon hearing the commotion, actively participated in the rescue efforts, providing additional support.
