The next major Premium Live Event for WWE will be Backlash 2026, which has been announced to take place on May 9 at the Benchmark International Center in Tampa, Florida. The show is set to present some highly captivating matches featuring top stars like Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns, The Miz, Bron Breakker, and more. Furthermore, John Cena will also appear for a major announcement. To make the show highly memorable, here are five shocking returns that can take place at WWE Backlash 2026:
5. Kevin Owens
One of the most beloved WWE superstars missing from the roster for a long time is Kevin Owens. The Prizefighter announced his time off due to a neck injury in 2025 and has been absent from television, except for a one-off appearance. While he still might not be cleared for in-ring action, Owens could likely make a shocking return in the match between his real-life best friend, Sami Zayn, and Trick Williams. Owens could even the odds as Lil Hatchy is in Williams' corner and possibly help Zayn in winning back the US title.
4. CM Punk
The last time CM Punk was on WWE television was on the RAW after WrestleMania 42, one night after losing his World Heavyweight title to Roman Reigns. The Second City Saint could make a surprise return to help out his real-life friend, Danhausen, as his tag team partner for the match against The Miz and Kit Wilson to a loud pop.
3. Randy Orton
Randy Orton's last appearance saw him take out Cody Rhodes with a punt kick after losing to him at WrestleMania 42. The Viper could make his shocking emergence at WWE Backlash this year to regain his momentum, and possibly go after Rhodes once again or begin a new storyline.
2. Kairi Sane
Kairi Sane was released by WWE in their recent talent cut round. However, fans have voiced huge support for her return, and #WeWantKairi has been trending a lot on social media. So, WWE could acknowledge the fans' support and bring back The Pirate Princess to run interference on behalf of her ally, Asuka, in her match against IYO Sky.
1. Shane McMahon
Danhausen said that his mystery partner loves money and hinted that he is not fond of The Miz. Those hints point towards Shane McMahon, who has been absent from WWE for the last three years. However, the hiatus could finally end and Shane-O-Mac could make a thunderous return as Danhausen's partner at WWE Backlash 2026.
