In a significant development for Maharashtra's boxing community, veteran coach Vijay Gujar from Pune has been unanimously elected as the chairman of the Maharashtra Boxing Coaching Commission. The election took place during the Maharashtra Boxing Association's first executive committee meeting held on November 17 in Mumbai under the chairmanship of MLA Pravin Darekar.
Experienced Leadership Takes Charge
Vijay Gujar brings an impressive 22 years of coaching experience to his new role, having trained numerous successful boxers throughout his career. Two of his trainees have received the prestigious Chhatrapati State Sports Award, while several others have successfully entered government services. Gujar currently serves as the Secretary of the Pune City Boxing Association and has spent the past 15 years working as joint secretary and secretary of the Coaching Commission, experience he says has prepared him for this leadership position.
Comprehensive Reform Agenda
In his first interview after assuming office, Gujar outlined a comprehensive reform agenda focused on addressing systemic issues that have plagued Maharashtra's boxing circuit. One of his immediate priorities involves improving the planning of state championships. "Coaches should be informed at least a month in advance for preparation," Gujar emphasized. "Sudden announcements don't allow athletes enough time to prepare or cut weight properly."
The newly elected chairman also highlighted the stark disparity in facilities provided to different stakeholders during competitions. "Ring officials get proper arrangements, but coaches also need good stay facilities, travel support and daily allowances," he noted, pointing to an area that has long been neglected.
Ensuring Fair Play and Quality Officiating
Gujar made it clear that eliminating bias and raising officiating standards will be a top priority during his tenure. He warned that action would be taken against officials who repeatedly make faulty decisions, stressing that ensuring fair play is essential for young boxers to trust the system and their coaches across the state.
Another key aspect of his reform agenda involves ensuring that qualified coaches, including International Boxing Association (AIBA)-certified trainers, accompany teams traveling to national tournaments. This move aims to provide Maharashtra's boxers with the highest quality guidance during crucial competitive events.
Addressing Travel Challenges
The boxing official also addressed persistent travel challenges faced by athletes, particularly concerning railway reservations. "Players should not be travelling on waiting lists or standing the whole way. Their reservations must be confirmed in advance," Gujar stated firmly, highlighting how logistical issues can significantly impact athlete performance.
The meeting that saw Gujar's election also involved a comprehensive restructuring of committees and several key appointments across the state boxing body, signaling a fresh start for the sport in Maharashtra.
With his extensive background in boxing administration and coaching, Gujar expressed confidence in his ability to drive meaningful change. "Now, as chairman, I want to focus on these gaps and strengthen the system," he added, indicating his commitment to transforming Maharashtra's boxing landscape for the benefit of coaches and athletes alike.
