Uttar Pradesh Honored as 'State of the Year' at Prestigious TOISA 2025 Ceremony
The state of Uttar Pradesh has been awarded the distinguished title of 'State of the Year' at the Times of India Sports Awards (TOISA) 2025. This significant recognition was announced during a grand ceremony held in Lucknow on Saturday, celebrating the state's comprehensive and transformative efforts to bolster sports infrastructure and nurture athlete development at every level.
Grassroots Revolution and Infrastructure Expansion
The award specifically highlights Uttar Pradesh's unwavering commitment to expanding sports access from the ground up. Across an impressive network of more than 57,000 gram panchayats, the state has launched extensive initiatives to develop playgrounds, install open gyms, and establish basic sporting facilities. This strategic move integrates sports directly into village-level planning, positioning it alongside critical community resources like education and other public amenities.
At the administrative level, the state has implemented a sophisticated tiered infrastructure model. This includes the development of mini stadiums at the block level and larger, more comprehensive stadiums at the district level. Furthermore, Uttar Pradesh is constructing international-standard sporting venues in key cities such as Varanasi and Gorakhpur, while continuing to maintain and operate existing premier infrastructure in major hubs like Lucknow and Kanpur.
Institutional Development and Athlete Support Systems
Institutional growth has been a cornerstone of the state's sports strategy. A landmark initiative is the establishment of Uttar Pradesh's first sports university in Meerut, a project currently underway. This is complemented by ambitious plans to launch dedicated sports colleges and establish Centres of Excellence across all divisional headquarters. These institutions are strategically designed to prepare and train athletes for future global competitions, including the Commonwealth Games and the Olympic Games.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, while addressing the gathering at the awards ceremony, connected the state's progress to a broader national movement. "Over the past 11–12 years, a vibrant sports culture has developed across the country. Inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision, we have actively taken this mission forward in Uttar Pradesh since 2017," he stated.
The state's support extends beyond infrastructure and training. Robust policy measures have been introduced to secure athletes' futures. More than 500 sportspersons have been provided with government employment in various departments, including the police force and sports administration. These roles allow athletes to continue their training and mentorship while ensuring long-term career stability.
Celebrating Uttar Pradesh's Sporting Stars
The TOISA 2025 ceremony, which evaluated performances from January 1 to December 31, 2025, across over 45 sporting categories, also saw numerous athletes from Uttar Pradesh receiving special honors for their contributions.
Notable athletes felicitated included:- Cricket: Kuldeep Yadav and Deepti Sharma, recognized for their pivotal roles in the Indian team across all formats.
