Kerala Trekker Endures Four-Day Ordeal in Karnataka's Dense Kodagu Forests
In a remarkable tale of survival, 36-year-old Kerala trekker G S Sharanya spent four harrowing days alone in the dense, remote forests of Karnataka's Kodagu district, subsisting on just a 500 ml bottle of water while completely cut off from communication networks. The IT professional from Kozhikode displayed extraordinary composure throughout the ordeal, which began when she got separated from her trekking group on April 2.
Disappearance During Descent from Highest Peak
Sharanya had been part of a trekking expedition descending Tadiandamol, the highest peak in Kodagu district, when she somehow lost her way and became separated from her companions. While the rest of the group returned safely that same day, Sharanya found herself alone in unfamiliar, challenging terrain with her phone battery dying and no network connectivity available.
"I walked till evening on the first day, but after that I couldn't go further because of the dense forest. I stayed near a stream," Sharanya recounted after her rescue, describing her initial attempts to navigate the wilderness.
Four Days of Solitary Survival
For the next three days, Sharanya moved intermittently through the thick forest, hoping to encounter a trail or human presence. She faced multiple challenges including unpredictable weather patterns with spells of rain, and the forest region is known for wildlife movement including elephants. Remarkably, Sharanya maintained her calm throughout the experience.
"I did not feel scared. I don't know why," she said, appearing composed as she emerged from the forest after her rescue. Her survival on minimal water resources while navigating difficult terrain demonstrated remarkable resilience.
Massive Multi-Agency Search Operation
Sharanya's disappearance triggered an extensive search effort involving nine specialized teams. The operation included forest officials, police personnel, members of the Anti-Naxal Squad, and crucially, local tribal communities with intimate knowledge of the terrain. The search was initially hampered by darkness on the first day but was significantly scaled up following directions from Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
The rescue teams employed advanced technology including thermal drone cameras to scan the dense forest areas. Karnataka Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre described Sharanya as "brave and adventurous" while noting that the lack of connectivity had made tracking her particularly challenging.
Dramatic Rescue in Remote Forest Patch
After more than 72 hours of continuous searching, Sharanya was finally located on Sunday afternoon in an extremely remote section of forest described by officials as "where nobody usually goes." Members of the local tribal community spotted her in this inaccessible area, highlighting the crucial role their terrain knowledge played in the successful rescue.
Sharanya was found conscious and stable, with authorities confirming she was healthy and had not suffered any major injuries during her four-day ordeal. She was immediately escorted out of the forest and taken for medical evaluation as a precautionary measure.
Importance of Local Knowledge in Rescue Operations
Officials emphasized that the participation of tribal communities familiar with Kodagu's challenging terrain proved instrumental in locating Sharanya. Their expertise complemented the technological resources deployed in the search, creating a comprehensive approach to wilderness rescue operations.
Sharanya had been staying at a homestay in Kodagu and joined the trek as part of an organized group. Her absence prompted immediate alerts that launched the round-the-clock search operation that ultimately led to her safe recovery.
