Anurag Thakur Advocates for Former Athletes to Return as Coaches to Bolster Indian Sports
In a significant address at the Sports Journalists Federation of India (SJFI) National Convention, Member of Parliament and former Union Sports Minister Anurag Singh Thakur emphasized the critical need for India to reintegrate former athletes into the sporting ecosystem as coaches and mentors. Speaking on Saturday during the Golden Jubilee edition hosted by the Delhi Sports Journalist Association (DSJA) at the Constitution Club of India, Thakur highlighted that this move is essential to strengthen the country's sports development structure.
Unlocking Potential Through Experienced Mentorship
Thakur pointed out that many athletes who secured jobs through sports are currently working in offices, missing opportunities to contribute further to the game. He stated, "Many players who got jobs through sports are now working in offices, while many of them could be involved with the game again as coaches or mentors. They may contribute far more to sports in those roles." This call aims to leverage their expertise to nurture emerging talent and enhance overall performance.
Emphasis on Data-Driven Development and Infrastructure
Beyond mentorship, Thakur stressed the importance of implementing structured systems for athlete development. He advocated for a data-driven approach, saying, "We need to analyse data and create a proper tracking system for the entire journey of an athlete so that talent can be identified early and groomed with the right support." Additionally, he urged for better utilization of sports science and rehabilitation centers to ensure athletes receive comprehensive care.
Thakur also called on state governments to play a more active role, noting that sports is largely a state subject. He emphasized, "States must increase their budgets, build infrastructure and hire more coaches if we want better results in the future." This includes regular evaluation of sports institutions and policies to ensure accountability and long-term impact, as he highlighted the need for stronger institutional accountability in sports administration.
Celebrating Milestones and Recognizing Contributions
The event, marking SJFI's Golden Jubilee, saw DSJA president Abhishek Tripathi welcome delegates, expressing pride in the gathering and gratitude for Thakur's interaction with the sports journalism fraternity. Several dignitaries were felicitated during the convention, including:
- Shivalika Chadha Malik of Hero MotoCorp
- Manva Sudarshan Hunswadkar of KRAFTON India
- Udita Dutta, founder and CEO of Artsmith
These recognitions honored their contributions to the sporting ecosystem.
Vibrant Sporting Competitions at the Convention
The convention featured lively sporting competitions, adding to its dynamic atmosphere. In the JK Bose Inter-Zonal T20 Cricket Trophy, North Zone and South Zone secured convincing victories at Roshanara Cricket Club and the Delhi Police Ground. Meanwhile, the AC Bali Table Tennis Tournament saw DSJA-1 defeat SWAB-1, and SJAM-1 overcome TNSJA-1 to advance to the final.
The title clash in table tennis is set for Monday, with DSJA-1's Kushan Sarkar, Bharat Sharma, and Norris Pritam facing SJAM-1's Amol Karhadkar, Ashwin Ferro, and Akush Dhavre at the same venue.
