Kansas City Chiefs Face Receiving Corps Uncertainty
Diggs' release arrives at a critical juncture for the Kansas City Chiefs, who are grappling with significant uncertainty in their receiving corps. For a team led by superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes, stability at the pass-catching positions suddenly feels more precarious than usual.
One major factor is the legal situation surrounding receiver Rashee Rice, who faces potential suspension following domestic assault charges. Additionally, the Chiefs are awaiting a crucial decision from franchise tight end Travis Kelce, who has yet to announce whether he will return for another season or retire from the game.

"The Chiefs missed the playoffs for the first time in 10 seasons, with the team's lack of reliable options at pass-catcher not helping the charge," Locker wrote. "Kansas City now faces a crossroads of what to do with various players at receiver and tight end."
Further compounding the issue, several familiar names could be departing. Receivers Tyquan Thornton, Marquise Brown, and JuJu Smith-Schuster are all approaching free agency, creating even more instability around the offense.
Diggs as a Potential Solution for the Chiefs
On paper, Stefon Diggs appears to be an ideal short-term fix for Kansas City's receiving woes. According to analyst Karl Rasmussen, the veteran receiver instantly becomes one of the most intriguing names available in free agency.
"Diggs immediately becomes one of the best free agents in the 2026 class," Rasmussen wrote. "He's recorded more than 1,000 yards in seven of his last eight seasons, and has five seasons with 100-plus catches under his belt. In terms of career-long production, only Evans can rival him among the other receivers on the market."
However, the equation is not entirely straightforward. Diggs will turn 32 this season and is coming off injuries that could make teams hesitant to offer a long-term contract.
"At 32, however, it could be more difficult for Diggs to find a team readily willing to sign him to a long-term contract, and he may wind up playing next season on a short-term deal," Rasmussen added. "He likely won't see the type of deal Alec Pierce is expected to sign, which could end up being in the range of $25 million annually."
Despite these concerns, Diggs remains a highly productive player. Last season with the Patriots, he posted 85 receptions on 102 targets for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns while working with young quarterback Drake Maye. His postseason numbers did see a dip, and off-field distractions that have followed him throughout his career continue to linger in the background.

Locker provided additional context on the Chiefs' receiving situation, noting, "Even the returning Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy aren't sure bets, with both still having room to develop into consistent game-breakers. The Chiefs will have to boost a group that produced the 21st-ranked receiving grade for Patrick Mahomes, although they won't have much cap space to do so entering March with the lowest amount of any team."
