Sameera Khan's 7,000km Cycle Campaign Empowers Indian Girls

Sameera Khan's Cross-Country Bicycle Mission to Empower Young Girls Across India

Driven by a powerful mission to inspire girls to dream beyond social boundaries, Sameera Khan from Anantapur district has embarked on an extraordinary bicycle campaign traversing the length and breadth of India. This remarkable journey, covering an impressive 7,000 kilometers across 11 states, has enabled her to interact with hundreds of school and college girls, motivating them to speak openly about their aspirations and the challenges they face in society.

Creating Safe Spaces for Open Conversations

"It feels so human when girls speak their minds in open conversations with me, get emotional speaking about their aspirations and challenges which they are facing in society," Sameera shared during an interview. After wrapping up her visit to three prominent English schools where she conducted inspirational talks with girl students, she reflected on her transformative journey.

"After travelling to far-off places and meeting young girls in the last 11 months of my journey, I have evolved into an almost entirely different person," Sameera revealed. "I find myself so deeply connected to the girls that my heart goes out for them when I hear their problems that are stopping them from becoming independent decision makers of their own lives."

From Humble Beginnings to Himalayan Heights

The youngest of five siblings, Sameera in her early thirties is an accomplished mountaineer who has scaled 11 peaks in the Himalayas and Europe. Her most remarkable achievement includes scaling Ama Dablam in Nepal, a formidable peak standing at 6,859 meters. An epitome of grit, resilience and perseverance, Sameera was born into a family from an economically weaker section, with her challenges compounded by the tragic loss of both parents in 2015.

A Global Journey Comes Home

Since 2018, when Sameera—a graduate in sociology and environmental science—stepped out with her mission to encourage girls, she has cycled through 37 countries worldwide, including France, Germany, Norway, Turkey, the Netherlands, South Africa, Japan and Sri Lanka. Her current Indian campaign began in the first week of March 2025, with her journey spanning multiple states:

  • Andhra Pradesh (her home state)
  • Rajasthan
  • Gujarat
  • Maharashtra
  • Madhya Pradesh
  • Karnataka
  • Uttar Pradesh
  • Bihar
  • Jharkhand

"Next, I will travel to West Bengal and Odisha before ending my campaign in my hometown," Sameera announced, outlining her upcoming route.

Vision for Adventure Sports Training Centers

Beyond her immediate journey, Sameera has a visionary goal for girls' empowerment through adventure sports. "I aim to build dedicated adventure sports training centres for girls in all the districts of the country so that the girls can pursue adventure sports like bouldering, mountaineering and river-rafting, etc.," she explained, highlighting her long-term commitment to creating opportunities for young women.

Official Support and Jharkhand Itinerary

Sameera expressed deep gratitude to Jharkhand State Chief Secretary Avinash Kumar and East Singhbhum SSP Piyush Pandey for extending warm greetings and best wishes for her campaign. During her Jharkhand leg, she has traveled to multiple districts including:

  1. Ranchi
  2. Deogarh
  3. Hazaribag
  4. Dhanbad

She entered Jharkhand through Chatra earlier in January, continuing her mission to connect with and inspire girls across diverse regions of India.
