New Delhi: Madhya Pradesh's Samardeep Singh Gill outperformed seasoned Punjab shot putter Tajinderpal Singh Toor to secure the gold medal in the men's shot put event on the final day of the National Senior Federation Competition on Monday.
Two-time Asian Games champion Toor started strongly with a throw of 20.07 meters, but the 25-year-old Gill took the lead in his fourth attempt with a massive 20.46-meter effort, which ultimately earned him the gold medal. Toor, who holds the national record of 21.77 meters, tried hard to bounce back but could only manage 20.06 meters in his final attempt.
Gill also surpassed the Athletics Federation of India's qualification mark of 20.36 meters for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. In the men's 400-meter hurdles, Karnataka's Yashas P and NCOE Trivandrum's Santhosh Kumar T both crossed the CWG qualification mark. Yashas claimed gold with a timing of 49.00 seconds, while Santhosh Kumar finished a close second in 49.06 seconds.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra's promising javelin thrower Shivam Lohakare bagged the gold medal in the men's event with a best throw of 81.71 meters. The qualification mark for the Commonwealth Games in men's javelin stands at 82.61 meters.
