SAI Rolls Out Four-Layer Protection for JLN Stadium's Mondo Track Ahead of Satinder Sartaj Concert

In a proactive move to safeguard the high-value Mondo track at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, the Sports Authority of India (SAI) has announced the implementation of a comprehensive four-layer protection system. This measure is specifically designed to prevent any potential damage during the upcoming concert by popular Punjabi singer Satinder Sartaj scheduled for this Saturday.

Background and Previous Controversy

The decision comes in the wake of significant criticism faced by SAI last year following Diljit Dosanjh's 'Dil-Luminati' concert, which left the stadium, including its field of play, in a messy and damaged state. Several athletes had publicly shared videos highlighting the extent of the damage, raising concerns about the impact on sports infrastructure.

The Mondo track, a state-of-the-art athletic surface, was laid last year at a total cost of Rs 23 crore in preparation for the World Para-Athletics Championship. Its protection is now a top priority for the authorities.

Details of the Protection System

The newly introduced four-layer protection system comprises:

  • Plywood as a base layer
  • Foam for cushioning
  • Carpets to provide additional coverage
  • A final protective layer to ensure complete safety

This multi-layered approach aims to absorb impact and prevent direct contact with the sensitive track surface.

Revised Tariffs and Stadium Zoning

In related developments, SAI has substantially increased the booking costs for the JLN Stadium. Previously, Indian artists could book the main arena for approximately Rs 4.5 lakh. However, revised tariffs notified on September 18 have raised this amount to Rs 25 lakh.

SAI Stadia administration Director Nidhin Jose emphasized, "We are ensuring that sport is not disrupted and that events do not cause damage to the stadium."

Furthermore, SAI has implemented a zoning system for the stadium, dividing it into:

  1. Zero-weight zones for most sensitive areas
  2. Low-weight zones with limited access
  3. Heavy-weight zones for equipment and staging

Sensitive surfaces have been barricaded ahead of Saturday's event as part of these enhanced protective measures.

Strict Post-Event Protocols and Penalties

Building on measures codified last year, SAI has established rigorous protocols for event management. The condition of the stadium will be thoroughly documented prior to the concert through detailed recordings.

Following the event, a comprehensive inspection will be conducted to assess any damages. The stadium will not be returned to athletes until this post-event evaluation is complete, with organizers bearing full liability for any identified damage.

In cases where organizers fail to ensure proper clean-up, SAI has clarified it will impose significant penalties:

  • A penalty charge of 10% of the daily tariff
  • Potential blacklisting from future event bookings at SAI facilities

The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, primarily used for athletics and football events, has become one of the most popular venues for non-sports events like music concerts in recent years. These new protection measures represent SAI's commitment to balancing commercial use with the preservation of vital sports infrastructure.
