Indian Motorsport Mourns the Tragic Loss of Rally Legend Hari Singh
The Indian motorsport community has been plunged into profound grief following the tragic death of former rally champion Hari Singh in a speedboat accident in the Maldives. This devastating incident has delivered a crushing blow not only to the racing world but also to Hari's family and countless admirers who cherished his remarkable career.
A Champion Remembered: The Life and Legacy of Hari Singh
Hari Singh was widely celebrated as one of India's finest rally drivers, earning the affectionate nickname 'Gypsy King' for his mastery behind the wheel. His career spanned multiple vehicle types, demonstrating exceptional versatility as he competed in Gypsies, Maruti Esteems, Mitsubishi Cedias, and even Protons in Malaysia. His talent was undeniable, and his determination was legendary.
"What really pained me was I felt like he was abandoned somewhere, for lack of a better word," shared Vicky Chandhok, former race car driver and former president of the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI). "It was hard to imagine what his family has endured. Nobody has yet come out with what really happened."
Early Days and Unforgettable Triumphs
Chandhok, who last met Hari on February 8th in Madras where they enjoyed a great evening together with Hari's wife Simran, recounted their first meeting in vivid detail. "Hari and his navigator Bittoo (G.S. Mann) had driven down from Chandigarh to Kodaikanal to take part in the South India Rally, which was his first attempt at national rallying," Chandhok recalled.
At the time, Chandhok was running the JK Tyre rally team and immediately recognized the challenges ahead. "We saw the condition of the car and said, 'Look, this car is not going to make it.' And he turned around and said, 'Well, I've driven this car down from Chandigarh. I'm sure we'll finish the rally.'"
Despite the car's poor condition, a remarkable transformation occurred. "What I did was, I took him home. Karivaradhan, my late friend from Coimbatore, was in Kodi as well. Jointly, between him, me and our mechanics, in two days we rebuilt the car completely from scratch, which is unheard of. We stripped it to the chassis, built the car and that was Hari's first National Championship victory."
This triumph in 1992 marked the beginning of an illustrious partnership. "I would say I had the privilege and pleasure of running Hari by preparing his car and giving him vehicles which were worthy of him winning four National Championships," Chandhok stated with evident pride.
The Safety Advocate Who Met a Tragic Fate
One of the most perplexing aspects of this tragedy involves Hari's well-known commitment to safety. "Hari was one of four members of the Federation safety commission, of which I'm the chairman," Chandhok explained. "So safety was always on his mind. That's why I can't understand why on earth these guys were on the speedboat without life jackets, because Hari was one who never compromised on safety."
This contradiction has added layers of pain to an already devastating loss. "I've never had bad dreams in my life, but these last few days have been terrible," Chandhok confessed, highlighting the emotional toll this incident has taken on those who knew Hari best.
A Mentor and Friend Beyond the Track
Beyond his racing accomplishments, Hari Singh was remembered as a generous mentor who happily guided aspiring drivers. His calm demeanor under pressure and "never say die" attitude made him both respected and beloved within the motorsport community.
"Hari was one of those guys who would never say die," Chandhok emphasized. "He would take on a challenge anytime and was pretty calm in most circumstances. He would somehow make sure that the car came home."
