Tragedy Strikes Pune Prison Guard Recruitment as Aspirant Dies During Physical Test
A 23-year-old aspirant, aiming to join the state prisons department as a guard, tragically collapsed and died while competing in a 1,600-meter race during a physical examination in Pune. The incident occurred around 9:25 AM on Saturday at the Shivajinagar police parade ground, casting a shadow over the recruitment process.
Details of the Deceased and Incident
The deceased has been identified as Purushottam Bhimrao Burkul, a resident of Deulgaon Raja in Buldhana district. The physical examination for the post of prison guards was being conducted by the Pune city police at the Shivajinagar police parade ground, a routine part of the selection process for such positions.
According to Sanjay Patil, Additional Commissioner of Police (Admin), the aspirant had completed the first three rounds of the race, each measuring 400 meters. He was in the final round to complete the full 1,600-meter distance when he suddenly collapsed. Immediate efforts were made to shift him to Sassoon General Hospital for medical attention.
Emergency Response and Aftermath
Patil further stated, "We immediately shifted him to the Sassoon general hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. The medical practitioners in the ambulance gave him CPR and tried to revive his pulse, but unfortunately, their efforts were unsuccessful." Following the tragic event, an accidental death report was registered with the Shivajinagar police station later in the evening, initiating an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
This incident highlights the intense physical demands placed on aspirants during recruitment tests for government positions. It raises concerns about the safety protocols and medical preparedness at such events, especially given the strenuous nature of activities like long-distance running.
The local community and authorities are likely to review procedures to prevent similar tragedies in the future, ensuring that aspirants' health is prioritized during competitive examinations.
