As a core component of this project, two advanced basketball courts have been constructed at the facility. These courts are designed to provide young athletes with modern infrastructure to hone their skills and pursue excellence in sports.
Remembering Suresh Kalmadi's Legacy
Suresh Kalmadi, a former Member of Parliament from Pune and Union minister, played a pivotal role in elevating the city's profile on the international sports stage. His notable achievements include:
- Organizing the Pune International Marathon
- Establishing the Shri Shivchhatrapati Sports City in Mhalunge-Balewadi

These efforts significantly contributed to Pune's recognition as a hub for athletic events and infrastructure.
Vision for Youth Development
During the inauguration ceremony, Meera Kalmadi highlighted her late husband's profound passion for sports. She emphasized that the new facility aims to offer children access to world-class sports infrastructure while fostering mental resilience through athletic activities.
"This centre serves as a pilot project," she stated. "We plan to gradually expand such facilities to other schools managed by our organization. Our goal is to encourage and nurture the inherent sporting talent in children, providing them with the resources to thrive."
Historical Context of Kannada Sangha
A statement released by the school provided historical background, noting that Dr. Shamrao Kalmadi, Suresh Kalmadi's father, founded the Kannada Sangha. This institution was created to ensure that children from Kannada-speaking families residing in Pune could receive education in their native language, preserving cultural and linguistic heritage.
The establishment of the Suresh Kalmadi Sports Centre marks a significant step in continuing his legacy of promoting sports and youth development in Pune. By integrating modern facilities with educational values, the project aims to inspire future generations of athletes while commemorating a key figure in the city's sports history.
