PT Usha Launches Girls Athletics Talent Hunt in Mangaluru for 2026 Vision
The Usha School of Athletics kicked off its 'Girls Athletics Talent Identification 2026' program at Mangala Stadium in Mangaluru on Sunday. Olympian and Rajya Sabha member PT Usha founded this initiative in partnership with the Infosys Foundation and the GoSports Foundation.
Trials Expand to Madurai and Vijayawada
Usha announced that the selection drive will continue with upcoming trials. Madurai will host trials on January 31, followed by Vijayawada on February 7. This effort forms part of the broader 'Gear for Gold' initiative.
The program targets girls aged 11 to 14. Successful candidates from these trials will receive invitations to a residential training camp. This camp will take place at the Usha School of Athletics in Kinalur, Kerala. Selected athletes may transition to full-time academy training starting in February.
Usha Appeals to Parents for Early Support
PT Usha made a heartfelt appeal to parents at the grassroots level. She emphasized the critical need to identify, promote, and nurture sporting talent from a young age. Reflecting on her personal journey, Usha credited her parents' unwavering support as a key factor in her success.
"Without my parents' encouragement, I would not have reached where I am today," Usha stated. She urged families to actively support children with athletic aspirations. Such backing, she believes, can help them win medals at national and international competitions.
Gear for Gold Initiative Strengthens Indian Sports
Usha provided details about the 'Gear for Gold' initiative. Launched in October 2022, this program works to strengthen India's overall sporting ecosystem. Its focus lies on building robust systems through academies, qualified coaches, and modern infrastructure.
"The focus is on building strong systems in Indian sport through academies, coaches and infrastructure, so talent can be identified early and nurtured consistently," Usha explained. The initiative offers holistic support to athletes. This includes training, nutrition plans, recovery programs, competition exposure, and overall well-being.
Additionally, it ensures access to quality facilities. The program creates inclusive, performance-driven pathways for aspiring athletes across the country.
