From Polio to Para Table Tennis Stardom: Tushar Nagar's Inspiring Journey

Struck by polio at the age of three, Tushar Nagar, now 44, faced a childhood where only his heart and mind functioned fully, leaving him bedridden for over a year with a paralyzed right hand. Many doubted he would ever lead a normal life again. However, with unwavering grit and determination, this resident of Aliganj, Lucknow, has scripted an extraordinary turnaround, becoming a successful chartered accountant and now ranking world No. 49 in para table tennis.

Overcoming Early Challenges with Family Support

"When polio struck, only my heart and mind were functioning while I was completely bedridden. But my banker father, the late Madan Mohan Nagar, and my mother, Purnima, didn't give up. They took care of me, and finally, I could go to school after over a year," Tushar recalled. Initially unable to walk even 50 steps, he relied on support and gradually overcame this challenge with the care of teachers and parents. He also practiced writing with his left hand, becoming proficient despite the obstacles.

Though average in studies, Tushar always harbored an interest in sports. After completing schooling from Montfort Inter College, he pursued a BSc in biology from Lucknow University, dreaming of a career in medical sciences. However, a court order barring persons with disabilities from pursuing MBBS forced him to abandon this path. Undeterred, he shifted to the commerce stream, working hard to become a Chartered Accountant in 2004. Simultaneously, he pursued law from Lucknow University and later established his own CA firm.

Finding Opportunity in Crisis During the Pandemic

Married in 2012 to MBA postgraduate Rati Vyas, who believes he can make the impossible possible through hard work, Tushar found a new passion during the Covid-19 pandemic. With lockdowns imposed, he discovered "avsar in apada" (a window of opportunity in crisis). He started playing table tennis with his wife, a skilled TT player, on a table placed in his office for staff.

Motivated by his wife and family, Tushar joined professional training at the KD Singh Babu Stadium. Gradually, he began participating in various tournaments, achieving notable success. "I won a silver medal at the UP State Para Table Tennis Championship in April 2026 and a bronze medal for India at the 2025 Jordan Para Open," he shared. Late last month, fresh rankings placed him at 49th in the world for para table tennis.

Inspiring Future Generations

Eager to learn and explore more, Tushar draws inspiration from his 12-year-old son, Vikhyat. "His curiosity inspires me," he added, highlighting how his journey continues to motivate those around him. From overcoming physical limitations to excelling in both professional and athletic arenas, Tushar Nagar's story is a testament to resilience and perseverance.
