German Automotive Giant Opel Enters Formula E Championship
In a significant development for electric motorsport, the German automotive manufacturer Opel has officially confirmed its entry as a factory team in the Formula E World Championship. The newly formed Opel GSE Formula E Team, based in Rüsselsheim, will make its competitive debut in Season 13, which marks the beginning of Formula E's highly anticipated GEN4 era.
Official Announcement and Strategic Timing
The landmark announcement was made at a press conference ahead of the upcoming Madrid E-Prix, featuring Formula E CEO Jeff Dodds and Opel CEO Florian Huettl. This strategic move aligns perfectly with Formula E's technological evolution, as the series prepares to introduce its next-generation GEN4 racing platform.
"We are delighted to welcome Opel as a new factory team in Formula E," stated Jeff Dodds. "As a strong German brand with distinctive engineering expertise and a fresh, bold image, Opel brings a long and storied history in motorsport and a new dynamic to the starting grid. Opel's commitment also shows the importance of Formula E for global car manufacturers in the transition to electric mobility."
Opel's Electric Future and Racing Heritage
Opel CEO Florian Huettl emphasized the significance of this entry for the brand's electrification strategy: "Joining Formula E marks a new milestone for Opel on our journey towards an electric future. With Formula E moving to GEN4 cars from next season, we see this as the ideal time to join this exciting, all-electric racing competition."
Huettl further explained: "Our Opel GSE Formula E Team will show what our brand stands for: German engineering, bold design and electrified performance - attributes that also apply to Opel's fully electric GSE models, such as the Mokka GSE and, soon, the new Corsa GSE."
The GEN4 Technological Revolution
The GEN4 era represents a quantum leap in electric racing technology. Formula E cars under this new specification will achieve:
- A peak output of up to 600 kW (approximately 816 horsepower) during qualifying sessions and Attack Mode
- This represents an increase of 250 kW (340 horsepower) compared to current generation vehicles
- Permanent all-wheel drive systems for enhanced traction and handling
Opel's Motorsport Pedigree and Preparation
Opel brings extensive motorsport experience to the Formula E grid, having previously competed in:
- The World Rally Championship
- Formula Opel and Formula 3 series
- The prestigious German Touring Car Masters (DTM)
The company's motorsport department, under the leadership of Opel GSE Formula E Team Principal and Motorsport Director Jörg Schrott, has already commenced preparations for the championship entry. A dedicated team of vehicle development engineers, strategy specialists, and operational managers is working toward the Season 13 debut.
Public Debut and Future Appearances
Before the commencement of Season 13, the Opel GSE Formula E Team will make its first public appearance during the official GEN4 launch event scheduled for April at the Paul Ricard circuit in Le Castellet, France. This showcase will provide the first glimpse of Opel's electric racing technology competing against established Formula E manufacturers.
This entry strengthens Formula E's position as a premier platform for automotive manufacturers to demonstrate their electric vehicle capabilities while contributing to the global transition toward sustainable mobility solutions.
